so im looking into UCLA next year, one of the few out of state students accepted. i have a couple of questions before i make my final decision however. firstly, wut type of dorms do most people reccomend. i dont know about all the available dorm options, but what options are available and what do students tend to enjoy the most. secondly, as i said im coming from out of state. is there any way i can recieve in state tuition? any loopholes that anybody knows about? i have several family members living in the southern california area, if that helps. thanks in advance - ohnonomiss

loopholes.. haha trying to cheat the government now? and no i doubt there's any loopholes, my roomies from canada but she pays in state tuition cuz her family moved to cali a few years ago. so good luck. and i would recommend a plaza, but then again, many first years like the normal res halls. just know whatever choice you go for, you'll get a triple haha.

wut do u mean "you'll get a triple"

are all dorms at UCLA triple dorms? are there no singles or doubles?
also wut is a res hall? when i visited UCLA they showed us where the dorms were located, but we did not go inside or go over the different types of dorms.

also, does anyone know about recieving in state tuition. i thot i heard somewhere that it was possible if u know people in the state and "claim residence" or sumthing there. am i mistaken? thanks - ohnonomiss

i wouldn't try to claim residency falsely. you'll be answering questions like, do your parents claim CA residency? how long have they lived in CA? did you go to a school in CA for the past 3 yrs? etc etc... if your parents haven't been living in CA and it's just some other relatives, forget it because you'll be lying on a legal document.
as for housing, i signed up first preference single, second pref double, third pref triple... i know i'll NEVER get a single, but since i'll be in the honors program i might have a decent shot at a double. but i'm expecting a triple and maybe i'll be pleasantly pleased.
we freshmen obviously don't get first dibs on housing... we get the leftovers, which will be the triple rooms. this is because they are renovating one res hall each year we'll be there so there are fewer rooms to go around.
there are plenty of threads on here dedicated to the pros and cons of the different housing options, go check them out! good luck!

thanks for ur responses

however im still confused on a couple of things: 1, what is the difference between a res hall and a plaza? i went through the other forums and found one has a bathroom or sumthing, im not sure which one or anything. is there any other differences between res halls n plazas? how do the conditions of the buildings n rooms compare to eachother? what about social life in the different types of dorms? thanks again - ohnonomiss

is it really hard for freshmen to get suites? me and my friends put down 1. suites 2. hall 3. plaza...any chance we will get suites or we'll end up in halls?

also, deadline to complete housing app is may 1, so when do we find out our housing results and where we will end up?

generally, nobody gets suites except atheletes, and even then, not freshman atheletes.

you'll probably wind up with a hall.

look at old threads...

res halls and plazas are very similar. they are more or less the same size, except plazas have private bathrooms (one toilet, one shower) while res halls share a larger floor bathroom.

supposdly plazas are less social because... you can't talk to other people while you pee/poo/shower, but i dont buy that. its a reputation. i guess we'll see next year.

its virtually impossible for freshmen to get suites (whcih are the nicest). there are very limited spaces. freshmen can get plazas and res halls without much difficulty.

so when do we generally get responses from UCLA regarding our housing apps like our rooommates, where we'll dorm, etc?

You'll probably find out sometime during June-July about where you'll be housed but you won't find out roomie info until sometime in August.

My daughter chose res hall as her first choice. Her sister went to UCLA and advised that the res halls are definitely more social, more easy to mingle and make new friends as a freshman. But you do have to put up with the communal bathrooms. Also I thought the housing office said she will hear back by the end of May; I could be wrong tho.

It's amusing to watch the metamorphosis of this poster over just a few months. Life must be like a kaleidoscope when you can age a few years and grow up in different cities, all in the course of a few weeks!

In August 2005 she wrote

hey, im a current sophmore looking into a field of engineering (computer engineering to be specific.) i live in southern california, so of course the UC system has popped up many times. I visited UCLA last weekend and loved it. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2161069#post2161069

But then the most amazing warp of time and space began! By April 18th 2 years had just flown by and now she is a HS senior with a serious decision to make

looking to go into a Computer Science/Engineering Major. i live in So Cal, and right now i have 3 prospective schools - UCLA, Berkeley, and Mudd. Which of these 3 schools would be best? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=177037

Well, time had flown by but geography hadn't changed because she writes

however, even with that my top choice right now is probably UCLA. not only is it close to home <...snip...> and i have alot of close family in the surrounding areas. and living in cali my chances of acceptance are pretty great. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2211783#post2211783

But then she clicked her heels or something and voila she grew up out of state!

April must have been an amazing month, taking her from a SoCal sophomore to a out-of-state senior in one fell swoop!

Please, pray tell, tell us how its done? Or is the joke on us? ;)

lol, looks like bad golfer caught me on my bluff

truth is i AM a high school sophmore in so cal looking into UCLA, UCB, and Mudd for a Comp Sci Major. lol, this thread wasnt even for me, it was actually for a family/friend of mine accepted to UCLA from out of state. i simply started the thread for him. no harm done.

p.s. - man, u have got ALOT of spare time to look up all my previous posts and analyze my past, dont u? oh yeah, and im a dude, not a chick. ohnonomiss is supposed to be read anonymous, but dont worry, ur not the first.

now with that out of the way i dont want this forum to go the wrong direction. please only post if u have HELPFUL information about the topics on hand. thanks

hey does anyone know a link where i could find information about housing costs? i would really prefer a single or a double and money is not an issue. I am a transferring student from a community college for fall 2006

hey if i get a housing situation that I don't like such as they put me in a triple when i want a single do I have the option to decline without paying any fees?
