Dorms (probably the millionth post about them)

So, I'm planning on attending UW, but I'm wondering about the dorms. I'm oos, so I have to stay in one and online they all look pretty good, but from all of the posts I've read about them, they don't seem quite as good. (In fact, Princeton Review ranked them something like #16 on "Dorms like Dungeons.") I love everything about UW so far, so I'm just wondering if anyone has some sort of insight into the housing options and dorm life on campus.

And, I'm sorry for posting what seems to be one of a jillion of the same threads, but I'm really curious about it, since I read somewhere else that we don't have much of a chance of actually getting into one of the dorms we choose.

Thanks for anything!

They are

AWFUL.

Just awful.

I visited McMahon Hall when students were just moving in for another year. Unfortunately, they weren’t doing any tours on campus, but we were lucky enough to find a girl that was generous enough to show us her dorm. She said she felt bad because “her room was one of the smallest.” That was no lie. The hallways to the dorms are fine, and inside the doors, there are many rooms that share a common room. Inside this girl’s dorm was seriously like 4 or 5 feet between the beds, and it was tile, which did not make it feel very much like “home” if you get what I mean. They had a closet, which was basically like a bathroom stall, but with a clothes rack. I was not impressed at all, but don’t let it stop you. When I got home, I looked on UW’s housing website and saw pics of McMahon that were like the room I saw but bigger. I also looked at other dorms, which look much better than McMahon. My advice would be to just visit over the summer and hope they have dorm tours. Good luck!

Hey there… I am a freshmen oos and I live in Lander and I love it… as a freshmen this was the BEST decision I could have made. The dorms are really what you make of them. The only place I would never want to live in is Mercer. If you’re high maintenance then maybe the dorms aren’t for you but they’re great for a first year experience. I’ve met a ton of friends, there are always things going on, my room is plenty big for two people (as long as you’re not in a triple you’re ok) and honestly it’s worth the inconveniances. In a few of the dorms there are conveniance stores, ours is open till 1 am which is great… there are always events going on with free food and stuff… i’ve gotten drunk plenty of times in my room and never gotten written up… it’s totally worth it. here is my take on the dorms

Lander: total freshmen experience, great
Terry: pretty much the same, maybe a little quieter
Hagget: smaller close knit community, great views, everyone who lives there LOVES it
Mercer: don’t go here. ever. although they do throuh hall parties and tend to have un
McMahon: mostly for older students, not much social life outside of your cluster
Stevens Courst: small social scene
McCarty: bigger rooms, but not as social

message me if you have any more questions. for first year (and first year only) i would say the dorms are a great experience.

dorms are really for freshman
once you’re a sophomore everyone wants to get a house or apt off campus.

go with lander though i was in terry and it was a good experince for the most part
its hella easy to drink in the dorms too especially if you have a chill RA

In your opinion is the partying in dorms easy to control (ie, if you want to party you can, if you don’t it’s not a bother)?

yeah well in terry, theres long hallways with the ra at one end, so if you get a room on the other end like i did, partying isnt really a problem as long as your door is closed. we partied pretty hard a few times and never got in trouble because our ra was really laid back and didnt care. just make sure to not get caught by the ra’s on duty that roam the halls.
noise can be a problem sometimes. especially in lander and terry. but its do-able.
its harder to party in mcmahon though b/c everyones really quiet so any noise will be more noticeable.

Thanks Serstas199! Very helpful.

Uhmm EmilyChopin, why
“AWFUL”?

Any particular reason or are you just against the whole thing?

I have another question about dorms, though more specific.

Which side of McCarty has the amazing view (and which side gets shafted), east or west?

Also, having lived in Terry and visiting Lander constantly, I would definitely choose Lander as a freshman, unless you absolutely hate noise.

I’ve heard that you don’t really want to live in Lander because it’s on South campus…

more info pls ?><

I’ve heard that south campus sucks! just because you have to walk so much more.
&the food is better in McMahon…so it’s pretty much between those two for me. if anyone has any other info, that would be great.

McMahon is mostly for quiet and older students.
When You’re a Freshman, you’d like to explore more and get to know more people
So I’d choose Landers!

yes! i chose the right dorms! lol

Apparentely if you go to the UW Housing website portal, you can click into view all the different dorms, they look pretty good in the virtual tours. But go around google and search, most feedbacks are towards the annoyed side. Not entirely sure why, maybe rooms differ in quality? :/

are they really that bad?? i viewed the virtual tour online and they seem comfy.

Try searching on other websites for “reality shots”. Afterall, the virtual tours are done by a company as a form of promotion for the university. At least that’s what I think :/

On websites like flickr, I’ve seen different users uploading pics of their own dorms, so you’ll have a general idea of what its really like there. I’ve seen a few of those user albums, and you’ll be suprised… seems like it really depends on how well u keep and decorate it, some pics look pretty good (for a dorm) while some just look kinda, well, off. Haha.

Is there an engineering floor at any dorm?

Also, what dorm is closest to the Newman Catholic Center?

Can you see the water or the mountains or even the Space Needle from any of the dorms?

Is there a large international, especially Japanese, population on campus?
