My roommate and I got totally shafted in the housing lottery, and ended up back in the dorm we were in last year. (A freshman dorm).

Today, we got a call from Res Life saying that a room just opened up in another dorm -- an upperclass, suite style dorm that has mostly juniors and seniors (we're sophomores, though the suite the room is in has other sophomores) that's on the quad.

I don't particularly want to live in that dorm because it's the loudest/most party like dorm on campus, but my roommate really does. She said that the decision is up to me. We would be living on the first floor in a suite with an RA, so my guess is that our suite wouldn't be insanely loud, but we would get all the noise from the quad, and all of the drunks being loud as they stagger in.

Should we take it?

Hard to say if I don’t know what your current dorm is like.

It’s a freshman dorm…all girls, corridor style, no lounges except the one in the basement…

The question is which dorm is nicer? (I’m guessing the non-freshman one). Admit it, there will be drunks everywhere on campus and you just have to deal with them.

If you really don’t mind comfort, stay in the freshman dorm. You can meet new people among the freshman class. If comfort is a problem, I wouldn’t bother staying in the freshman dorm, switch rooms.

Just my opinion.

The suite style dorm is nicer. The freshman dorm we were in is one of the worst on campus.

Yes, there will be drunks everywhere…but there will be more on the quad/in the upperclass dorm. And the room we were offered is on the first floor.

Comfort? Huh?

I have no real desire to meet people in the freshman class. I’m a sophomore, so while I have no issues with making friends with freshman, I have my own group of friends that is comprised of mostly sophomores and seniors.

well you’re gonna have to make a decision. Which is the worst of two “evils”? Drunks coming in on the first floor in the quad? or hanging around freshman girls that will want to get to know you?

Personally, I would definitely go for the suite style dorm if the freshman dorm is one of the worst on campus. However, if drunks really annoy you more than freshman girls, you may want to consider living back in the freshman dorm knowing that you already have a group of friends.

If it were me, I would pick the upperclassmen dorm. I lived with mostly freshmen last year and they were by far the sloppiest kids on campus in terms of partying, and next year I suspect I will also be surrounded by mostly freshmen (on the ground floor next to the elevator) but the facility is much nicer and my room is much better. To me it’s worth it. I’ll be blissfully happy in my dorm during the day and most weeknights. I can handle a few loud weekends for that.

If we stayed in the freshman dorm, we would be with mostly sophomores. The entire 5th floor was sophomores after the lottery, and so was half the 4th floor…so that’s 1 1/2 out of 4 floors (the first floor is classrooms and offices).

since the upperclassmen dorms are nicer, i think you should choose that one.

and living in freshman dorms two years in a row doesn’t sound too pleasant.
but if you liked it, then i guess you could live there again.

Word of warning:

Last year (my sophomore year), I lived on the first floor of my dorm. I heard drunks stumbling around at ALL hours and times. I was woken up several times too.

Let me add though: I’m a partier myself. The fact that this annoyed me is huge. But it gets old real quick when it’s tuesday at 4am and you’ve been woken up by idiots yelling right outside your window… and then again on wednesday and thursday (who on earth can drink every night?)

I would never, never live on the first floor of a dorm again.

If the dorm would have a good chunk of sophomores, I don’t see a problem living in a “freshmen” dorm. It would be better than the first floor of a nicer dorm any day.
