It seems like people have had/will have a lot of questions regarding dorms at GW (I know I do), so let's make one thread where people can ask and answer dorm questions. I'll start:

How hard is it to get a single as a RD freshman? Do they fill up fast, or do most people want roommates?

Thanks in advance and congrats to everyone who got accepted and is enrolling!

If i recall correctly, their are no single freshmen dorms on the main campus. Now, there may be some on the Vern. If that’s true, i bet it isn’t that hard to get a single.

Thurston is where most of the freshmen will be. 1k+ freshmen, the rooms range from doubles to six’s (which every combination in between). Some say its old, a party dorm, they have their own strain of STD (xD)… etc

Potomac is the nicest/newest. It is a double/double suite. Most EDI/II students are in this dorm because they get priority housing.

Does anyone know where Honors housing will be? Thanks

I second that, @testobsessed!

“If i recall correctly, their are no single freshmen dorms on the main campus.”

Dang! I was really hoping to get a single. But I also really don’t want to live on the Mount Vernon campus. Oh well!

How big are the doubles in Thurston? Not too cramped for two people? I guess that’s subjective, but, any info would be great!

Thanks!

Not a current student, so correct me if I’m wrong. Crawford has some singles, and is at Foggy Bottom. Hensley and Somers also have singles on the vern. Honors housing was at Thurston last year, but I believe it is moving to the Vern for next year.

Oh, also, how does housing work? Do you list a certain number of preferences for housing?

When I called and asked about housing I was told that you only get to rank the dorms by preference, everything else which includes if you want a single, double, triple etc… is not up to us.

If I am wrong, correct me but that is what I was told… sometimes I get different answers when I call though…

I’ve heard you rank them including size. For example, your list may be Thurston double, Potomac double, Thurston quad, Thurston triple, etc. Again, I could be wrong. I do know that we get the housing application April 23rd.

You rank them by name, there’s no choice for size. The only singles dorm is Mitchell and that’s reserved for upperclassmen. However, freshmen can get singles on the Vern’s West Hall. There are some singles in other dorms such as Crawford, but I think there is only 1 or if I’m wrong, less than 10. Usually these singles are for the handicap. The majority of you will end up with a roommate(s). And yes, Honors housing for the class of 2012 will be on the Vern. It’s probably going to be in West or Somers since they’re the biggest. It’s also not true that it’ll be easier to get singles on the Vern because 1) West has most of the singles 2) Honors kids are probs going to occupy them and they get priority 3) upperclassmen who want West also get priority 4) Merriweather, Cole, and Hensley each have like one or two singles.

Damn. Well, on that thread it says that you rank 7 dorms. Is it common that people get their 5-7th choice? Or do people usually get their first few choices?

Thanks esthetique. One question, do freshmen who don’t live in thurston (particularly those who live in potomac) really get left out of the party scene?

^No. The party scene is pretty prevalent on Foggy Bottom, both on campus and off.

i doubt we could get left out of the party scene if you live in potomac because thurston is diagonally across the street. just make sure you make friends there :)

Just a fun little fact, ED students get priority housing over RD students, so they will most likely get their first choice.

But if thurston is your first choice, don’t worry about it :P

I think I got my 4th or 5th choice? Don’t quite remember. Also, for thurston, I think there was a choice of upper or lower thurston. I think I chose lower thurston, but I didn’t get that lol. Haha yeah if you live in potomac it’s hard to miss out on the party scene considering it’s less than 5min away from thurston.

honors housing is in West Hall next year!

West Hall is on the Vern, right? Isn’t GW afraid they will attract fewer Honors students if Honors housing isn’t at Foggy Bottom? I know that West Hall offers single bedrooms, but still, being right in the middle of DC is one of the big draws for Honors kids, no?

Yeah West Hall is on the Vern. There was a lot of controversy within the Honors community about the move but the administration was pretty adamant about it and there was only so much that we could do about it. You can still be in the program without being in Honors housing, but yes, I think that there will be less people in honors housing next year bc its on mt vernon

Yeah, I’m thinking that I won’t be living in Honors housing next year (my first year), because it will be on Mt Vernon. I figure that I’ll find my community of friends in Foggy Bottom, and then also have a community of Honors friends. I’ll meet more people that way! (Even though the new housing on Vernon is like living in a palace…)
