Dorms vs renting a studio/ UC Berkeley

Hi guys. I really don't want to live with a roommate, but I want to be safe in case if I can't find a decent apartment before the semester starts. Can I complete the housing application before the deadline, but later (sat in August) let them know that I will not need a dorm space? Or does it oblige you to live there for at least a semester/year?

On the housing app, you list preferences for which housing you want to be in. A couple weeks later they should send you an offer for a room, and that’s when you officially commit to a yes/no. After that it’ll be trickier to get out of the contract and you might lose some deposit over it, but it’s certainly possible to get out if you really want.

Look into Martinez apartments if you don’t want a roommate but are considering campus options. Apartments are 4 people each, but you’d get your own bedroom. Price-wise it’s probably comparable to what a studio near campus would cost.

If you don’t want to be in dorms, you should start seriously looking for housing ASAP. Many students already have housing for next year figured out, and it gets harder and harder to find good/cheap housing as fall gets closer.

Thank you. I also checked craigslist for ads, but the only thing offered in Berkeley are rooms (on craigslist).
How much do decent studios cost?
