my roommate and i are planning who is going to bring what for our dorm room. 12th street has large rooms, so could we get away with bringing something to lounge on/watch tv on? i'm not talking something large... just something small.

haha I think it depends on the RA cause I don’t think were really supposed to bring any outside furniture in the room. LOL

fold away chairs? bean bags? that type? i’m wondering if we can get away with those.

ohh I would think that kind of stuff is fine. I meant real furniture like another desk.

I asked the girl who gave me a tour of the dorm rooms during the accepted students day if I could bring something like a beanbag chair. She said no because NYU doesn’t allow any outside furniture because it’s a fire hazard. However, I have a friend who goes to Polytech who says they have the same rules and she just hides her stuff when they do room check. So I guess the answer is you shouldn’t bring that stuff but you technically could.

Someone in my group also asked about beanbag chairs when I was in the dorm workshop at orientation and the guy (who works in the central housing office, BTW, so he probably knows his stuff) says that those would be fine. He said that the no furniture thing refers to anything that can’t be moved easily.

Now the question is, can you buy some cheapo plastic shelving or something else that would be pretty discreet to move in and put up, because some of the dorm rooms, especially in 12th street, are pretty big.

Yes, plastic shelving is allowed.

No outside furniture means no tables, no extra chairs that aren’t provided by NYU, etc. We had a TV stand, folding chairs (those fabric ones with metal? I don’t know how to describe it!) and a plastic shelving thing in our bathroom and we passed RA inspections at the beginning of the year.

RAs and Housing usually walk around at the beginning of the semesters to do a “fire hazard check”, which means they’re usually looking for contraband. They announce when they’re doing checks a few weeks in advance.
