Dorms: Willard, Allison, or Elder? How are they different?/Are they really??

How are Willard, Allison, and Elder different from each other socially? I know, of course, Elder is all freshman and Willard is a res-dorm, but are different kinds of people attracted to the different dorms? I've heard Willard is social but weird. I'm not sure what people mean when they're saying that. Also is Elder more of your typical college experience? I would definitely consider myself more artistic/laid-back/intellectual, not sure yet whether or not I'm going to go greek, but I'm really social and like going out a lot too.

Bump! ^ I’d really love to hear some people’s perspectives.

Also, can anyone comment on Elder versus Bobb-McCollough? My incoming Freshman Engineering daughter wants to live north and wants to know which to preference. Thanks.

According to my freshman D, Elder is the most desirable north campus dorm for freshman. Bobb has the reputation of being somewhat dirty and loud. Elder is very nice, though still a bit noisy. It’s on the other side of Sheridan Rd, so it’s a little less convenient location-wise than Bobb. My D lives on the second floor of Elder, and it has the reputation of being the most social (read loudest) floor. Both Alison and Willard are on south campus. Willard is a residential college which has a separate essay requirement for selection. It is also pretty far west on campus. Alison is the farthest south, so a lot really depends on what part of campus your D wants to live. For an engineering student, north campus is more convenient. My D will live in a sorority next year, which is south campus. It’s good to experience both north and south- each one has different advantages.

If you want more info, you can message me and I’ll give you my D’s email. She would be more than happy to answer any questions about dorm selection or anything else. She’s a Peer Advisor for incoming freshmen next year, so it will give her good practice!

As mentioned above, a big factor is the location. Elder is up north whereas Allison and Willard are south. Campus isn’t that big (15 minute walk from Elder to Allison, I’d say), but it’s distance is definitely something you should still consider- especially with the awful winters sometimes.

Elder is definitely considered the most social dorm so if you’re looking to live north (science, engineering classes are up north and everything else is south/mid-campus) then I would recommend living in Elder. Willard and Allison can both be social, but not up to Elder’s standards. And remember that your experience is also what you make it!!
