I'm thinking about going to USD next year, and I was wondering what the dorm situation was like. I've tried researching it, and the best thing I found was that the Maher and Missions dorms were considered the best freshman dorms. Is there anyone on here that goes to USD or has a kid that goes to USD that can help me out? I just would like to know what their opinion is on what the best dorm really is. Thank you!

I’m interested in this as well. Anybody?

My son is a freshman this year and I have looked at several of the dorms…here is what I know! He lives out in Missions A—each building is 3 stories, each floor houses a large living area, a balcony (his overlooks Mission Bay which most do), 4 double bedrooms (large) and two bathrooms. Basically the living room splits the floor with 2b1b on each side. Upsides to Missions: you have 7 roommates instead of just 1 or two…which is nice as a Frosh since there is always someone around to do things with. You have a great cafe in the middle of Missions dorms that serves very popular food. Downside you have to walk up the stairs to get to class.
We have a female friend you lives in Maher. Maher is in the middle of campus … above classrooms so it is very convienent to get to class. Maher is more of a dorm set up as each room goes off of a hallway. Our friend lives in a triple but they do have their own private bathroom.
So Maher is more of a hallway dorm set up and Missions A is a suite style. Also I believe in Maher your bathroom is cleaned by staff weekly and in Missions A you have to clean it yourself.
Hope this helps!

I think I heard that any private bath (incl. Maher) is not cleaned by staff, only the communals. Not that you should pick a dorm based on that. You could always leave it til parent weekend and have it cleaned by your father. Worked for my nephew in WI! And believe me, BIL is not a man that goes around cleaning bathrooms. He was that disgusted.

More about Maher: defintely in the center of campus, and the way the rooms open to the outside hallway, especially with the huge 3rd floor open space, probably leads to more incidental meetings and hanging out.

Thank you sooooo much for explaining!

So in Missions, you basically have 1 actual roommate (like only 1 other bed in your room), but the bathrooms are connected to another room like yours? Like a Jack and Jill set up? So you only end up sharing a bathroom with 3 other people?

And in Maher you have 1 roommate and 1 bathroom you share?

Oh, and also, what would you say the best dorms are? Maher or Missions?

sparksfly: did you read the thread on the overnighter? lizardrock answered alot of dorm questions for me there. Pretty sure Maher is mostly triples, one bathroom in room. We saw a room in Maher on the tour, it was decent sized but it is just a dorm room. I think my D plans to request Missions A. Smaller bedroom than Maher but only 2 per room with common living space. Same cost for a double in Missions A and a triple in Maher according to website. Not sure how housing is assigned though (FCFS or lottery).

midwstmom: Oh sorry, I just read that thread right now! I didn’t see that there. Thanks for all of your help!

I noticed on the USD portal today for housing that May 9 is the tentative date for incomming Freshman to register online. Just a FYI!

lizardrock - is that date in their mysandiego portal or in the general website info?

I just copied this from the Key Dates and Timeline on D’s portal:
April 2011 - Housing and meal plan sign ups begin

She has not enrolled yet but we plan to shortly. Is that why she does not have the specific date? Thanks for the heads up.

Midwstmom - it was in the portal as I was checking on summer housing for my son. Once you enroll you will notice that your mysandiego portal will contain many more tabs over time for everything from meals, accounts, academics, dorms, etc… Not right away but as the months tick by tabs of importance will be added. I will continue to keep my eyes open for you. There was also a great housing brochure that just came out…did you see that? If not I will try and post a link.

Thanks lizardrock. We have not received a housing brochure but again she’s not enrolled yet. Did you mean by cyber or regular mail?

It came through cyber…I am not sure how to post a link :0 it is not letting me. If you want to private message me your email address I will send it over to you.
