Dorms?

What is your favorite CMU dorm? (for incoming freshmen)

I believe Mudge, Donner, and Stever are generally the most popular dorms on campus–Amy Revak’s blog talks a bit about most of the dorms–you can look in the April and May 2010 Archives. :]

I agree with you. As of right now Mudge is my favorite dorm. Does anyone know how quickly it fills up?

^It fills up very, very quickly.

Morewood E Tower is also one of the most popular dorms. I’d say something along of the lines of Mudge, then Morewood, then Donner (maybe Stever?) in terms of popularity…

… have any of you incoming freshmen even visited the dorms? How can you have a favorite? :p

I live in Mudge. best decision for freshman year. Will fill up fast though (especially since they’re putting some of the interest housing in here next year).

Well, I guess I won’t be getting Mudge :frowning: Hopefully Morewood or Donner…

^ Indeed. Random question, even though a dorm has wireless, is it worth it to bring an ethernet cord? And how long?

Wired is usually faster than wireless due to the router/modem placement and thickness of walls, but is it significant?

wired is worth it in the event that somebody on your floor does something stupid to knock out the wireless. I always liked to pay catch in the halls of etower, but managed to never hit the router with my football…

wired is also necessary for access to some file sharing capabilities… which is illegal so you shouldn’t do

Well, there is Dtella, which is CMU’s file sharing system - I don’t remember the legal technicalities on that one, but I do know you won’t get in trouble for using it, and it has a lot of good stuff  You do need an ethernet cord for it.

dtella is definitely not legal. It’s harder to get caught than on a normal file-sharing network, but I know people who have gotten kicked off of CMU’s network for being caught using it.

That said, watching all of HIMYM for free is pretty nice…
