For those of you who were accepted, which dorms do you like and why?

I really like BJ and pierce, i think. i'll find out in april on the dorm preview day, though, i suppose.

For those of you who were accepted, which dorms do you like and why?

I really like BJ and pierce, i think. i'll find out in april on the dorm preview day, though, i suppose.

not in but......
max p b/c its new and the social life is supposed to be great.

Snell sounds pretty cool (plus it's right on campus).

I stayed in Max P for the summer program, and it was pretty nice. I don't know, though.

The good news is EA gets a preference, and the earlier one commits to the school, the greater the preference. Shoreland (from what I hear) is a very social, though long distance, dorm. It is being replaced with a brand new dorm just south of BJ in fall 2008, however.

B-J looks like how you'd imagine Hogwarts from Harry Potter to look.

I want to stay in Shoreland if I get in.

If you want Snell-Hitchcock, asiaknight, you had better send in the form now. Sarahbara wanted Snell last year (and got it, I think), but she sent in her form right away. There's not a lot of spaces, and they fill up quickly. I liked Pierce when I stayed there a couple years ago, but the rooms were small. B-J has the best location, I think.

My son is in Hitchcock - was extremely lucky to get in RD. Lots of house spirit - never a lack of people to talk to - RM's and RH's are great. He is looking forward to scav hunt this year.

Wait, so dorm assignments are on a first-come first serve basis? What if I wants to wait until April to make up my mind? Does that put me at a disadvantage?

I hear that WUSTL has one of the best dorms. I hear that it is several times larger than the average one. I also know that when I saw the University of Wisconsin madison dorms, they were probably a fourth the size of my room. You can't live in it. It is too small.

Waiting until April will be a disadvantage as far as dorms go. My S received none of his top 3 choices, BUT loves his current dorm and House, and wouldn't live anywhere else. I think one bonds with the folks they end up with and believes theirs is the best and everyone else's is lacking by comparison. As for room size, I understand the rooms in the Shoreland are the largest, though they might fall down on you (just kidding about that).

So if I wait until April to go on to the dorm preview I will be at a disadvantage?

You will still be ahead of all the RD kids as an EA admits as far as dorm selection goes.

how so? Cuz everyone has until may ! to make up their minds, so if RD kids submit their stuff before me or anyone else, wouldn't they have mroe of a choice?

EA still gets a preference and gets their preview before the RD students get theirs. I believe there is an advantage among "EA students" for dorm preference by accepting admittance earlier.

Can't find it on the website, but last year the EA kids had priority. You will receive your housing assignment late July/early August - so I am guessing they assign with the whole class known. Part of the matching will also be determined by your answers on the housing questionaire.

Oops, cross-posted with idad. At least we had the same answer!

Well, that sounds reasonable, and I'm sure all teh dorms are really cool, at least from what the info packet said, I think I would be happy in most of the places. As long as its warm with cool peopel and a kitchen, I think I would be happy.

My friend recently stayed overnight with another friend (1st-year) who lives in Shorland...she said the rooms were HUGE with nice private bathrooms and everything. Plus, the music practice rooms and stuff in the basement are all awesome. However, Shoreland's sooo far away...how much of an inconvenience would that be?

I really like the location of MP and Hitchcock; however, i kind of dislike the community bathrooms thing, and MP is honestly kind of huge and ugly. I don't know. Do students tend to switch dorms after 1st year?

Shoreland is amazing, but unless you like walking (often in cold weather), you'll have to take the free UChicago provided bus to classes.

I don't want ANYTHING with community bathrooms - I hope I don't get screwed as a Xfer into that - I want a single and I want my own bathroom.

How many freshmen get into Max P? It's not exactly like the other dorms, but I like it.
