My D was accepted to American and is really excited about going to college in DC. She visited over a year ago and doesn’t remember much about the dorms. When choosing housing she needs to list her top 3 choices. What dorms are more popular? She would like a coed dorm in a great location. Any suggestions?

i thought there were only two dorms at american

There is the north and south complex. The north complex includes Hughes, Leonard and McDowell. The south complex includes Anderson, Centennial (no freshman) and Letts

My son is a junior at AU (has loved it from the beginning, btw). He lived in McDowell the first 2 years, then moved off campus. Anderson-Letts is a large complex, and is known for being a bit of a party dorm. Many greeks live there, since there are no official greek houses. I believe Leonard has many international students. Hughes and McDowell are pretty similar, and have a nice location near the gardens and ampitheatre. All the dorms are pretty much equidistant from the "tunnel" shops, gym complex, student center, etc.

jkazoo - thanks for the info - I am really happy to hear your son loves American.

Do you know anything about the north and south side fitness centers? - like how well equipped - do they offer drop in classes, etc

Are forced triples very common in all the dorrms or are they concentrated in only certain dorms?

Do you know if it is difficult to take classes at an entry level outside of your area of study at American?

unless u want to commit social sucide....

choose to be in Letts or Anderson.

forced triples = not that common... but very easy to detripple... they pomise by oct... but to Katrina triples were detripled by the sping term

chances of triples don't increase or decrease if you choose Letts or Hughs though....

electives are common... i'm a poli sci/ CLEG major but i'm taking a health & fitness class

fitness centers... are fine... i just use bender though

doublelayer009 - when they detriple by October - why is there space available in October that is not available in August?

When they detriple who stays and who goes?

thanks for your comments!

Uh, I've heard south campus gets far more fire alarms and partying compared to north campus - north campus is best for freshman, especially mcdowell. My friend is a sophomore there.

haha mcD... north side... completly cut off from social life. In McD people are interested in being quite and studying... not very friendly...

..space is available in oct becuase of a variety of reasons:

-people get into their weightlisted school last min

-people freak out and leave

-people drop out of school

-people decide to move back home

-people get kicked out of the dorms

...etc etc... so thats why there is space avaiable... for example a friend of my was going to be in a tripple... but the third guy never showed up.

another friend of mine... his roomie sexually assulted a girl.. and was kicked out of school. A friend of ours who was in a tripple moved in.

While my son, the one who lived in McDowell for 2 years, agrees that it's quieter there on average, he also said his social life was quite full there. He also mentioned the large number of fire alarms going off in Anderson/Letts.

He was initially assigned to a triple in June, but it was a double by the time he actually got to school in August.

awww... but fire alarms are fun... u get to mingle and meet new people... and the prof who lives in anderson always gives out candy :)

social life on n. side = 2 thumbs down. Your seperate... away from EVERYONE...
