Dorms?

Hey everyone! I was deciding which program to do in the Honors College, and for EIP the website says all students are required to live in La Plata. And so, I have a few questions:
How is La Plata in comparison to the other residence halls? Where do students in other programs live? Which dorms have the fewest parties (not a huge fan of high school parties; my mind may change in college, but I want to focus on my studies)? What is considered the "best" dorm to have, or the "luckiest" hall to be assigned to?
Thank you so much!

I’m a Freshman in the EIP program, and I would definitely recommend it. LaPlata is in the Ellicott community on North campus, along with most of the others.

LaPlata is conveniently located right next to the north campus diner, right next to Eppley Rec Center, a minute away from the football stadium, and in between two convenience stores. As of now, LaPlata is the only dorm on north campus with air conditioning, and it has a newly-renovated basement where you take all of your EIP courses (with the exception of first semester). In the past, LaPlata was considered the best dorm to have. I have heard that the other dorms will be getting AC, but I don’t know if it’s true or when.

Even honors dorms have people that like to party. My floor has a bunch of sophomores that are loud, but it’s really not that bad. It really just depends on who you have on your floor. I’d say though that in general, you’ll have better luck in an honors dorm in terms of noise. I can tell you that ACES and DCC are going to be in the brand new Prince Frederick Hall next year, which will most definitely be nicer than LaPlata. However, there will also be Freshman Connection students living there, and they like to party. Gemstone is in the Ellicott dorm (no AC), and ILS is also in LaPlata. Humanities is in Anne Arundel, which is a nice dorm, but it’s in the middle of campus (right by the library) and not particularly close to either dining hall.

I wouldn’t pick your program based on which dorm you’ll live in. EIP is not that much work, is a great experience, and has a lot of great people. ILS and Gemstone are a lot of work, so I wouldn’t recommend those. EIP typically accepts 75 students each year, but this year’s class was larger.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the answer! I’ve decided on EIP. I have a history with some companies and advertising, so (from what I’ve read) it’s right up my alley!

Great, we’d love to have you! Throughout first semester, Jay (the program director) brought in many entrepreneurs and founders of companies, so it suits you well. One of the people I got to hear speak at an open seminar was the CEO of Honest Tea.

I recommend doing the “High Rise” overnight stay in March. I did it last year and I had a great time. Spots fill up fast, so sign up soon if you want to do it.
