Alright, I don't know where I should stay...can someone post their top three choices for dorms...also, if i'm in plan 2 honors, should i stay in an honors dorm? do i have to? would it be better?

since dobie is private, do i not sign a contract with ut housing for them??

i'd say go for the honors dorms
then if you are a girl..kinsolving's really nice. and it's right across the street from the quad. with probably the best food on campus
dobie is private. you don't sign a ut housing contract for them. you sign it with them

There are LOTS of options for dorms for freshmen, both on campus and off. I'm living at Castilian next year, and I have friends living at Towers, SRD, San Jacinto, and a student village off campus. Here are some insights:

The Castilian - This co-ed, off-campus dorm is RIGHT on the Drag, and is a large white building that you can't miss. Great location (food! yay! haha), and it is cheaper than the other 2 main co-ed, off-campus dorm options (Dobie and Towers). I picked The Castilian because they have really good cafeteria food, are relatively cheaper than the other dorms (actually cheaper than San Jacinto!), a great location, clean rooms, private bathrooms shared with one other room, and a social atmosphere but without the parties and loudness found at Towers or quiet aloneness found at Dobie. They even have roommate matching service! www.thecastilian.com

Dobie - Originally my first choice for housing back in May, Dobie has GREAT rooms that are very big and it is right next door to the business school on the south side of campus. Huge glass building that also can't be missed. Yet, as I was eating lunch in their food court (they also have an independent movie theater!) I noticed that almost every other student was either international or a minority, and I looked in College P R O W L E R and my assumption held true. There are also a substantial amount of gay students living there (I'm one too), but I decided Castilian was a better fit for me. Dobie is very quiet. www.dobiecenter.com

Towers - THE PARTY DORM. I have heard many stories...I wouldn't want to live there but it sounds good for parties, as their policy is very lenient and the guards don't care. Predominantly Jewish and pre-frat boys. I heard it smells like pee. But, it does have apartment style rooms and they are very big with balconies, so whatever. More expensive, but more sq. feet. www.universitytowers.com
