I thought I would get this one started. I think Accepted already can vouch for this. Your dorm assignment is based on "first paid first served". So if you are absolutely sure you are going to CMU, and you are particular about your dorm situation, get your deposit in ASAP.

My S was very particular about his dorm choice freshman year. There weren't as many choices for him due to his wants/needs. Luckily we got our deposit in pretty early and he got his first choice.

Yep, very true. Get your deposit in first and definitely pick an all-freshman dorm as it'll be crucial to building character and making friends that'll last you for the rest of your 4 years. I would suggest New House but Morewood is another good choice (as is Donner and Mudge, etc.)

what exactly is "EARLY"??? I'm going to visit CMU during spring break before I make my decision. Will making the deposit in the second week of April early enough to get the dorm that I want? (I want New House, Morewood E, Mudge or Donner).

I really like New House because it's sort of new and have A/C & heating, but the standard double looked smaller than other standard doubles. Also, New House standard double had a closet and no drawer.. =(

Just get it in ASAP and hope for the best. The rest of the factors you can't control. New House is smaller but you have social kids at the fifth floor and you usually don't spend all your time in your room at all.

Of course I'm biased towards New House but Morewood is a good choice because you get the Underground in your basement (without stepping outside) and you get bigger rooms. There is less of a "community" feel to Morewood though since it is so big.

Everyone has heating lol but New House is the only one with A/C.

Also, realize that since New House has two pumps (one for heat and one for A/C) the heating and A/C work a lot faster and without much trouble. This combined with the smallness of New House dorms and you can totally heat your room 20+ degrees in a VERY short time. You can also freeze you room in a relatively short time as well.

We didn't get our deposit in until we visited in April as well, (three years ago). It all depends on how many students get their deposit in before you and how popular the dorm is. New House is very popular.

My S wanted Henderson House, probably not the first choice for most freshman.

He has since been in London Terrace and Scobell.

Do you get singles?I'm not exactly prudish...but it just seems to me that a single would make it easier for me to transition since I'm an intel. I don't want to get stuck with other Indians and then get roped into a clique. At the same time I don't want to get stuck with a hardcore druggie or one of them people who cuts themselves up.

Probably sounds a bit nitpicky :) but I just want to be able to do my own thing in the firsgt year to get my bearings.

Also do eating places in CMU serve veg. food?I mean really veg as in no meat at all(but not vegan).

There are no such things as "hardcore" druggies or people who cut themselves here. You watch too many college movies :)

I don't think you can get a single (except in Mudge) but ask the office. Also, we do serve veg food (it is always one of the options for a block and they always offer veg food).

My D, now a soophomore, lived her first year at WEBSTER APTS. three girls to a 2 bedroom.(YIKES!) But they decided to lose one girl and moved into VERONICA APTS. because they thought it would be closer. IT WAS! but the sacrifice was losing two bedrooms (you were placed two to a studio) and the kitchen was minuscule. Now she just opted to return to WEBSTER, where she should have remained, as the apt. is LARGE, luxorious, with an eat in kitchen, full living room and two ample sized bedrooms. So she realizes she needs to start 15 minutes earlier to class, but the walk she claims is good for her and she enjoys her homemade meals too much. Of course, it will cost mom and dad about $650 more a year!

Of course I'm biased towards New House but Morewood is a good choice because you get the Underground in your basement (without stepping outside) and you get bigger rooms. There is less of a "community" feel to Morewood though since it is so big.

Do/did you live in New house 5? That floor rocks, I bagged there in october.

Hi, Toomuch. What's new on the CMU scene???? My D is loving it...she says she can't get off her HIGH...her HIGH on studyin' and partyin' I have NEVER seen her so happy. Her grades are good and she just got an internship in FLAVOR CHEMISTRY at a flavor outfit in Congers New York. They make all the flavors for Haagen Daz. Could you have died and gone to heaven? ICE CREAM tastings!!! Ultimate goal as of late....HEINZ 57 Varieties. She wants to make the 58th. Willing to live in Pittsburgh for that! I'm shocked. Anyway...good school choice for her.
