How are the dorms at Cornell, and how do they differ?

yeah...anyone know the best hall?

right now im thinkin about the townhouse community.....

When applying, you do not really have a say in the matter as to where you are placed. (I just got accepted and just applied for housing online). All it asked was whether you are a smoker or not, whether you stay up late or go to bed early, and what type of room you want (single, double, triple, quad, townhouse). It also gives you the option for a theme housing (which are in the packet sent to us in the mail), and to pick a roomate.

Unless you are applying to Holland International Living Centre...you just give your preferences and they allot you a room at a dorm they think is right.
Only HILC allows you to apply to their dorms directly. But 60% of the rooms are reserved for int'ls.

There are other program houses, you know...

And townhouses...

You can't pick your dorm unless you're in a program/townhouse

I have a single in Dickson and I don't think I'd have it any other way if I could go back and decide. I requested a double and was placed here, but am really happy with how it worked out. Dickson is pretty social since people are all in singles and would probably get lonely/bored if they didn't talk to the people in their hall. The privacy of a single is also really nice. If your RA doesn't suck you can basically have people drinking in your room at any given time. Additionally, you don't have to sexile your roomate, which would probably cause some tensions between you too if it were a frequent pattern (just throwing that out there..). It's really nice not having to wake up to someone's alarm, too.

Donlon is also known for being social. It's pretty loud and my friend's hall smells like..idk..I guess like frat party and some sort of body odor (I think it's some kid in her hall, though). If you study all the time you might not want to live in Donlon, since people, from my experiences there, tend to be loud. There are tons of study lounges there, though.

Jameson...arranged in suites. I guess it could be cool if you liked your suit-mates. The layout of the dorm is weird as hell.

Court/Mews- they're pretty quiet and too clean. They're newer and I guess nicer than the other dorms. The doubles are pretty small, though.

Balch- I've actually never been in a room there, but I've heard they're really nice, if you can tolerate living in an all girls dorm.

Low-rises- Never been there, my friends live there and call them the ghetto. My friend who was a first-timer visiting Dickson kept raving about how nice it was, which means the condition of the low-rises must be somewhere in the range of gross to frightening ;).

High-rises- I don't think people really live there. I don't know anyone from there/no one in my sorority is from there..therefore, people must not live there :).

Townhouses- great if you live with a cool bunch of people...sucks if your housemates are tools, because you can't throw (obviously small/controlled)parties/gatherings. I wouldn't recommend them, as they're really far from the central area of freshman dorms and a really long walk to class. I would not go to my 8:40 class if I were in the townhouses.
