Ok which are the best guy dorms? I'm leaning towards the newer ones b/c of all the commodities n i'd have a greater chance of getting my own bathroom! however many ppl say they prefer the old ones... what do u think?

why are you worried you will have no choice in the matter whatsoever....

hahaha i know, but i'd still like to know! ur in nd right? tell me how each of the buildings is perceived....
i once talked to this guy n i told him that the dorms in the nd application with the big banner HERE COME THE IRISH looked like a lot of fun... n he said YEAH WELL THOSE ARE KNOWN AS THE GAY DORMS! (HE said that, not me so don't start attacking me about it) n i was like WHY? n he was just like B/C THAT'S THE REPUTATION THEY HAVE....
im not asking u to prove or disprove what he said.... im just asking u to tell me what u think about them and i KNOW that it's only your opinion n could be completely wrong just like his, but hey... ur entitled to it... so please share

Okay, let's get something else cleared up about the dorms. With a few exceptions, I know of almost no rooms that have their own bathrooms. The only instances I know of it happening are in one or two cases; all are in the "old" dorms (not the newest built on West or North Quad). So your chances of having your own bathroom are almost non-existent...everything up here is communal bathrooms with shower stalls being off the bathroom.

Now as to what dorms are better, the old or the new. Personally the best feature of O'Neil, Keough, Knott and Siegfried is not so much the fact that they have air-conditioning as it is the size of the rooms. Let's face it you stop needing air conditiong by early October up here, and as I write this email there has yet to be a day that has required AC yet this year. So AC is useful for less than 2 months of the time you would be here.

I lived in one of the "old" dorms for four years. I'm not gonna say which one (why? look at my "name"...I prefer to not give away anything about myself...) but suffice it to say this dorm is not known for the size of its rooms. My roomate and I shared approximately a 10x12 space as freshman, with modular furniture and a sink in the room...

he was probably talking about Zahm, as they have hung a banner like that before, it basically covers one whole side of the building. Now Zahm...their reputation is unique. But they are not know as the "gay" dorm. Somehow they do manage to take perfectly normal boys and turn them into something else every year. I blame the streaking...

hahahaha everyone keeps mentioning Zahm!!! ur the fourth person who's told me that Zahm = trouble. what usually "happens" to the people who go there?

they seem to regress, degenerate...do some really stupid things at some times. It is as though they feel they have to uphold their dorms reputation so they end up behaving in a certain manner.

huahuahua i hadn't read the last part of ur msg! and that's exactly what everyone else blamed for all the trouble... the streaking...

i'm a freshman in oneill and it is obviously the best dorm on campus.

by the way, any future freshies out there from southern cal? drop me an im at alo53 if you want to talk about ND or anything. everyone should definitley come here, best year of my life

Yo guys, how are the GYMS in the dorms? I thought that was the coolest aspect becuase I really don't want to walk in the cold winter to a gym and then feel really exhausted. I am more concerned about getting a gym in my dorm. Anyways, what are your thoughts on these dorms? Is ND trying to get a gym in every dorm?

Can you switch dorms after frosh yeaR? I know you have no choice over your dorm but I mean or at least, do you give any details of what you like and what you are looking for in a dorm?

A good number of the dorms do have gyms and they are nice... nothing spectacular, but many have a basic weight set and a treadmill or something like that. I don't know that ND is trying to get them into the ones that don't have them (like mine) but some may depend on your proximity...I am right by the Rock.

You can switch after frosh year but you will need a friend in that dorm to "pull you in" but it does happen. The initial dorm assignments are completely random, but don't worry, it will be fine!

Crap, that was my 500th post...I hope you like it :)

Switching dorms isn't that hard...you just have to get the written permission from your rector and from the rector of the dorm into which you would like to move. Like irish said, you can only move if you have a friend who is willing to "pull" you into his/her dorm. Or if you should try to "float" for a single - that is to forego room picks in your dorm, in the chance of moving into an open single somewhere/anywhere on-campus...always a risky move.

The gyms in dorms aren't great. I think it's really only the 4 newest male dorms that have them. I could be wrong there, but those are the only ones in which I have seen them. Basically if you're looking to work out, be prepared to walk. Besides its not as though you aren't going to have to be out in the wind during the day. I would have to say NO to your question about gymn in every dorm. There is no space to put one in many.

question...
i know we don't get to pick our dorms...
but do we atleast get to fill out some what of a survey...
like i know for BC we had to fill out what times we were more likely to study, how messy we were, and if we wanted the dorm for social or quiet space...
just wondering...or is it completely 100% random with the roomates?

No survey for ND...I think when I applied they only asked about if you had a smoking preference (not that you're allowed to smoke in the dorms anyways)

It's truly random room picks...the ultimate crapshoot....

Nemo, Irish, what's the system for getting into each individual room? Do students have keys? ID cards? Pin numbers?

And if they're key cards, is your meal plan attached to that?

All of the above. To get into the dorm you need to use your student ID (which is attached to you mreal plan) to open the door. You just need to swipe it at the main door but after hours and on the side doors you have to use a pin number as well as the card. Then, for the room you just have a regular, old, boring key. Hope that helps.

it doesnt matter which dorm you get in because you will end up loving your dorm and thinking its the best anyway.

irish- im guessing you were in either dillon or alumni

He's in Fisher...If you cruise through some of his old posts, you'll see he makes reference to it...

personally I don't see what's so great about Fisher (yes I'll stir the kettle of dorm rivalry Irish...) I mean their big wooden scow, ahem I mean boat is parked outside the dorm right now...So we all know what that means is coming up, the Regatta. Why did y'all change it to that shade of green anyways Irish? I thought the brown looked better...

lol, I am not sure, I am a fairly new Fisherman. I used to be a member of the Angry Mob but I moved over (which most people can't fathom). Fisher is nice because you are centrally located on the best quad to be on! It isn't the newest dorm, or the most attractive, but it is a good group of guys who host one of the most popular dorm events out there. Let's be honest, there are the big three...Dillon Pep Rally, Kenan Revue, and Fisher Regatta. A lot of the other dorms try, but they just can't match up. Also, Fisher has long been the place to be, as it used to be a senior only dorm back in the day. Regis Philbin even lived here! I am not positive as to where you live Nemo, but if you are our rival dorm, I have three words for you... location, location, location.
