Dorms

Hello, I have some questions for those who are familiar with the dorms at UCR. I have only visited A-I for a brief moment so I don't have a good feel for everything as a whole. Any bit you could contribute would be appreciated.

I'd just like a bit of insight on each of the dorms. Which are more social? How are the rooms in each compared to the others? What would be the pros and cons of each dorm? What differentiates an honors hall from the other halls?

Thanks in advance.

I have only visited Pentland Hills and I like it. The dorm is smaller than UCB's Foothill(I have only visited this one), but it is way clearner and nicer. It gives the student more privatecy but not as social as the other two dorms. If you want better social, I heard Lothian is the most social. People would knock your doors and ask you out to eat, and most people just left their doors open. If you ever get a chance, you should visit these dorms and see which one suits you best.

Personally, I like Pentland Hills because it is new, clean, and more personal space.

Pentland hills - newest dorm, personal a/c control in every room. you share a bathroom with 8 other people at most. Has a reputation for being not very sociable (though my building was very sociable). I enjoyed living there. We always had our doors opened so we definitely bonded.. its the people not the place that makes a place fun.

A-I - Oldest dorms, kind of ghetto. Central A/C. Halls consist of 20+ people. Paper thin walls, my friend is an RA there and he says its noisy.
communal bathrooms

Lothian - a combination of A-I and Pentland. I think east lothian is the newer one? Shared bathroom with the whole hall...

Thank you, this has helped immensely. Originally I was planning to stay in A-I since it seems to be a good environment but the thin walls are a problem for me.

I understand that Pentland Hills is set up into wings with a few dorms in each that share a central area and bathrooms. What is the set up with East and West Lothian? Is just a long hallway with dorms on either side like A-I? Do you guys know much about the rooms (central AC? thin walls?) and how social Lothian is?

Sorry for the numerous questions, I'm not able to visit any time soon so I have to resort to outside help. Thanks again.

When I lived in A&I, someone urinated in the water fountain. The hall RA subsequently put up a big poster that warned people that someone had taken a wizz in the fountain. Several months later, somebody took a dump in one of the showers. If I were you, I'd live in a different dorm. Better yet, get an apt. Even better, transfer.

909

You're an idiot. He should transfer because someone played a prank in the dorm? Have you ever spent anytime with teenagers?

I'd go with Pentland man, that's where I am now. It's a lot quieter than the others, so if you want a little more activity go with Lothian.

Oh, no. I here all the retards live in Pentland.

909

Oh, the irony.

I have lived in Pentland Hills for about a year during my freshman year and I have to say it is very nice. Some halls are not very social but mine was because everyone opened their doors. The Pentland Hills Suites are not considered the most social there though. There is no dining hall in Pentland, so you will have to walk to A&I.

The Lothian halls are nice, they are not too old and the halls are opened up enough for it to be quite fun. The dining hall burned down though, so folks will have to eat at the A&I dining hall.

The A&I dorms are terrible and are like prison hall. I personally don't like them, but they are the most inexpensive to live in and they are quite a sociable place to live.

Lothian reopened their dining hall this year.

Hey! Alright I am completely lost to which dorm I should choose. Do all the dorms have loft beds? Is the Lothian really bad? There is so much irony, I'm confused... So accordingly...the Pentland hall is the only one without a dining hall, right?
Can anybody explain to me how exactly is the Pentland hall. By the way what about the a/c at Lothian, is it central or personal? Basically what is the difference between pentland and lothian...like the rooms and showers/bathrooms.... Is Lothian really noisy? Pleassssssssssseeeeeeeee Help.......

Pentland is suite style. Each building has three floors, which in turn have four hallways a piece. Each hallway then has 4 rooms, 2 toliet/sink bathrooms, and 2 shower bathrooms. Each hall has a small lounge area with couches as well. Pentland is very quiet, each hallway locks, so you can't interact with very many people at any given time.

Lothian, I believe, is 3 or 4 floors, each floor containing 4 hallways. The hallways are incredibily long, somewhere around 20/30 rooms. There is a boys and girl's bathroom in each hall (lines of showers and toliets per). The halls also have one large lounge area.

Loft beds: Pentland has loft beds, Lothian does not. In Pentland you can have your bed at 3 different levels, but can only change one per year.

Dining Hall: Pentland doesn't have a dining hall but it's like a 2 minute walk to Lothian or A+I.

AC: Pentland has a digital thermostat in each room but can only go as low as 68 degrees. Lothian has an old fashion one in each room, but actually works better. Can go to a lower temp, faster.

Noise: Pentland is extremely quiet, Lothian is rather loud. People slam doors, listen to music, yell at each other etc etc.

Thank you so much! Your reply really helped... Just one more question...Are you sure that Lothian east or west has no loft beds? Thank you once again.

um.. you can request to have your beds be loft or separated.. and you can do it more than once a year, they just charge you 5 dollars after the first time. And Pentland is quiet if your building is lame.

Thank You!

At Pentland will there be an oppertunit to entaract with the oppostie sex or will it just be four girls locked up in a suite together?

I also have a question about the meal plans. I'm probably going to go home on some weekends. I don't eat that much. I probably will have guests... I was thinking about the flex 10 with $450 Dining Dollars. Any suggestions?
Is it hard to upgrade the meal plan later, or do they charge you for it?

Thanks in advance!

it's easy to upgrade, hard to downgrad.

i live in the dorms--all week and weekends and I still don't use all 10 of my meals. The dining dollars are awesome though, eating on campus is better.

you can interact with the opposite sex in Pentland but if that's what you're looking for, live in Lothian.

Lothain FOR THE WIN!

Sorry, I'm Lothian biased. Will always be.

i need serious help in choosing between pentland hills and east lothian. i want to live where it's very friendly but i also consider silence and privacy very important. also, which residence hall has more space? and how are the bathrooms in east lothian? is it really dirty and smelly from what i hear?

Get the base 10 meal plan, becuase dining dollars only get you food and it is not cheaper to get it with your meal plan. besides the food is absolute garbage, regardless of what you may have ate when you came to visit or during an event for admitted students, they made it specially for that event and more than likely it was different from what current students are eating. It's the same food everyday no variety, and it's unhealthy as can be. The flex gives you dining dollars, but you can put it on yourself for less...for every hundred you put on they give you 5 dollars (you do this at the science library not at the dorms), and this can be used anywhere, c-store, cafeteria, bookstore, anywhere on-campus. So I strongly reccomend getting base 10, unless you will never go home and refuse to eat out (about a 10min walk, or take trolley) or expect to stay in your room and play computer games all day, and not make friends with cars.
