Dorms

What are the best dorms to live in as a freshman? I know it's kind of early but I want to have an idea of dorm choices before I get the housing forms.

u can always go to the uni website to check it out. just fyi, they have singles (8metres sq), doubles (15metres sq), triples and apartments. but the apartments are not available to us freshmen. also, singles take up 53% of dorms, doubles abt 1/3.

All the new dorms are pretty much the same, only slight differences in design. The modern freshman dorms available are Koenig House, Lien House, Dardick House, Danforth House, Park House(will be rennovated this summer for freshman living) and depending upon how large your class is and how many of my class decides to live on the 40 next year, Eliot House may be available to freshman.

That being said, all these dorms offer suites of doubles and triples. The suites are made up of two rooms that share a bathroom. Most triples; however, have their own bathroom. The triples in Koenig are huge (I have the second biggest room on campus and a a group of girls who live next door to me have the largest one). IMO, Koenig has the largest doubles as well. It is so much space, there there is no way it will be utilized unless someone put a couch in the room.

As of now, Park House is an upperclassmen dorm, so I don't know how the rooms will look once it is rennovated and turned into doubles for freshman live. Freshman this year had the unique opportunity to live in modern singles (available in Eliot House and Wheeler House). This was only because the class of 2010 was extremely large so I don't know if that opportunity to will come up again. I imagine, since Park will be offered to freshman, that Eliot and Wheeler will go back to being upperclass dorms.

As far as traditional dorms, Umrath, Ruby, Beaumont, and Lee (Beaumont might be torn down next summer). All of them are pretty much the same as well. I like Umrath the best among these. Beaumont and Lee have weird, riot proof walls. These dorms offer singles, doubles, and triples. The triples are small. If you want to do traditional, I'd go with a single or a double. There are common bathrooms, each floor has 2 male bathrooms and 2 female bathrooms. I heard Lee did something weird this year and had co-ed bathrooms; however, I don't know how true that is.

Now, with all this being said, the housing form isn't going to let you choose the ResCollege that you want to live in. It will ask you the type of housing you want to live in (modern or triple, single, double or triple) and then you will be randomly assigned a ResCollege. All of the ResColleges are open to everyone, so if you really wanted to live in Ligget/Koenig cause we have cool leather couches and a plasma TV, but you ended up in Brookings College, its ok...you can always get into Koenig with your ID card and use the resources.

And SBQ, the reslife website sucks and doesn't, imo, offer enough information about the ResColleges. It is unorganized and ugly...i am working on getting some changes made to it, lol. If anyone else has questions about the ResColleges and dorms, feel free to ask. I'll make sure I cover this in a blog entry as well!

Jeffwun, I'm confused. You said that " the housing form isn't going to let you choose the ResCollege that you want to live in. It will ask the type of housing you want to live in (modern or triple, single, double or triple)". So, does that mean that you can choose whether you want the to live in the modern versus traditional dorms but not the specific ResCollege?

Just to clarify, there are /some/ large triple rooms in the traditional dorms. Everyone who walks into our room is amazed at how large it is. But then there are other triples on our floor whose room is really small, so you never know what you're going to get. One word of warning about the triples though-you don't get closets. It's this weird shelving system. The traditional doubles do get closets though.

nervous1, you are correct. The form will only ask you questions about what size room you want (single, double, triple) and what type of dorm you want (modern or traditional) and a couple of questions about your living style (noisy or quiet, clean or messy, etc). You won't be able to choose the actual Residential College that you want to live in.

Jeffwun

It would be nice to be able to go to Beaumont/Lee House website and not find last year's info and photos. What's up with that? Who's responsible for keeping things up-to-date?

Jeffwun
I wonder if Washington University's Residential Life office is even aware that there is a lack of recent material on some of the dorm's websites? Sorry about getting off-track here.

Which dorm/s are used for the FSAP?

missmolly-I think it must be by rescollege. If you go to ruby/umrath they at least have pics up from this years' move-in.....but yeah, I do agree that the website needs improvement.

if you go to fsap will you live in that same room during the school year? or have to switch?

I just want to reiterate what elph said, there are some spacious traditional triples. They don't have clothes tho. The new triples do have cloest.

As far as the reslife site, the webmaster is about to leave for another job, that is where the updating hasn't been like it should be. I have contacted some people who said they will contact some people; however, I imagine that the site will stay like it is until a new webmaster his hired. The individual res college sites are maintained by the RCDs. They are busy with a lot of other things so they don't have time to update. This is why one of my suggestions to ResLife was that they mantain the Rescollege sites themselves (to maintain consistency) or at least make it the job of the ResCollege RCC (Residential Computer Consultants) to maintain the ResCollege's website. I will talk to some more people about this and see if I can get anything done sooner than later.

The dorms uses for FSAP are usually traditional dorms. Last year, Umrath was used, and in year's past, Ruby has been used. I imagine it will be Umrath again this summer; however, that is only speculations. If you do go to FSAP you don't have to and more than likely will not keep the same room during the school year.
