Dorms?

Could someone tell me about the different freshman dorms at Boulder? I'm interested in dorm "personality" and location (for a potential business or poli sci major).

Thanks!

There are two different dorm locations for freshman; Main Campus and Williams Village, which is a short distance away. My D is a freshman and she's at Williams Village. It wasn't her first choice, but she waited until the last minute to decide where she was going and the Main Campus fills up first. However, she loves her dorm and has made many wonderful friends there. She actually likes being off Main Campus, as it's a very tight knit community at "Will Vil" and she feels like she's coming "home" at the end of the day.

Most people who decide to go to CU request Main Campus for their housing. It is much easier to go back to your dorm between classes. However, Williams Village rooms are much newer and nicer, and they have air conditioning and sinks in the rooms, which the Main Campus rooms don't have. Dorm housing requests are on a first-come, first-serve basis. As soon as you're accepted, they send you a form and you need to send it right back with your requests.

Dorms on Main Campus include Baker, Libby, Cheyenne Arapahoe, Sewell, Farrand, Hallett, Kittridge, Smith, the Engineering Quad. Many of these have what's called Residential Academic Programs (RAPs) where you actually have some of your classes in your dorms. For more information, here is a website you might be interested in: http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/freshman/academics/raps.html

Here's another website that gives you general information about the dorms: http://housing.colorado.edu/housing/h_index.cfm

I realize I didn't give you much info on the "personalities" of the dorms, did I? As a mother, I'm probably going to be pretty clueless about that one. Maybe someone else here can enlighten you. Good luck!!

Thanks for all of the info. My son was checking things out and is interested in Farrand. Do you know anything about that dorm or the program in it? Thanks!

I don't know anything specific about Farrand, but I do know that their Residential Academic Program focuses on courses in the liberal arts and the focus is for students in the College of Arts & Sciences. There is a $725 annual fee for taking part in the program, which is required to live in Farrand.

Best of luck!!

Does anyone know anything about the Engineering Quad? Sounds like an ideal set up for engineering undergrads. Just wondering if it's as good in reality as it sounds on paper (web) :-)

My D has former high school friends that lived in the Engineering Quad; they really liked it there. Very convenient for classes.

Two of D's friends (also freshman) are Engineering majors. They live in Kittridge because they are also in the Residential Honors Program. Kittridge is more out of the way, though.
