dorms

how are the dorms at brown?

best ones, worst ones?

bathrooms?

distance from places?

most close knit?

heating/AC (very imp. for me, i’m from so.fla lol)

advantages & disadvantages

etc…

I heard Andrews is the best for first-years because all the rooms have sinks. That's in Pembroke, I think.

Hope is right on the main green, which is nice.

Perkins is practically in Massachusetts, but I heard most ppl in Perkins bond more than the rest of the students.

I'll be so happy to have a sink.

i love living in andrews. not only do we have sinks, but our rooms are also bigger than many of the other first year dorms.

This is just my opinion, but I think the best freshman dorms are in Keeney. There are pretty courtyards and archways (home to many a capella concerts when it is nice out), spacious rooms, nice lounges, a "secret" sixth floor, and really nice work-out facility. Because most of the freshman are housed in Keeney, it is also arguably the most social. The location is great, right near the main green and wriston quad (home to the ratty and frats), as well as a close walk to waterfire and the rest of downtown.

Littlefield Hall and Hope College are also freshman dorms in great locations--right on the main green.

As mentioned, Perkins is further away, but it has a reputation for being the most close-knit community--apparently a substantial number of ex-Perkinites end up getting married.

Andrews has the sinks--I think the rooms in Andrews are also the biggest.

Other freshman dorms on Pembroke are not as nice (Em-Wool, etc.), but a bunch of them have been recently renovated so they might be better now. People who live there have do have the advantage of not having to leave the building to eat or work out.

As you get to be an upper-classman, the housing options get more interesting. The rooms in Caswell, a sophomore-only dorm on lincoln field have walk-in closets and fireplaces. Barbour has giant common rooms along with your own bathroom and kitchen. Machado and Slater probably have the most beautiful buildings.

Housing at Brown really ranges a lot, but I think each place has its own advantages.

Do freshmen get to request specific housing or are they randomly placed?

So is Andrews the most popular (difficult to get into) for freshman?

Also, is it really that great living all the way over in Pembroke? It seems a bit isolated from the Main Green. Not nearly as bad as Perkins, though.

Does anyone know if the rooms in Hope College are any good?

I guess I will have to wait for the French house until I am a sophomore. :(

Thanks for the links, dcircle -- very helpful!

sure thing. almost everyone gets randomly placed. i've heard rumors that "famous" people (royalty, etc.) get preference for wayland house because it has the tightest security.

the rooms in hope are decent, but probably not the most grand because it is so old. (it was built ~200 years ago--it even has a copper water pump outside it from the early 1800's).

I heard prospective music majors get unusually highly placed in Perkins since it is near to the music building. And that the same goes for environmental science majors and Hope.

Wow, I definitely want to live in Keeney. Archways, courtyards, a "secret" 6th floor... It sounds so mysterious.

I think I'll be happy to live anywhere, as long as it's AT BROWN!

Very true. Anything at Brown is fine with me!

i'm actually feeling andrews right now, cause i had heard about the whole sink thing and sometimes i'll be randomly doing something (like fixing my [crazy] hair or whatever) and think how handy it is to have something like a sink nearby, plus i saw pics that someone posted of their dorm in andrews and they seemed pretty nice (nice windows!)

in general, though some people have said otherwise, it seems to me like the brown dorms aren't that bad (i like the sound of that fireplace lol). the dorms i've seen have all been in public state schools (UNC, UF, etc...other then when i visited my sister in P-ton), and Brown's sound pretty good in comparison :)

but i guess i'll follow the consensus and agree that anywhere in brown is good lol...even a tent pitched on the main green (well, a tent with heating & AC lol)
