dorms

The whole rivalry thing is on the gene strand where willingness to ask for directions should be ;)

To those interested in O'Neill hall, here's some information that is not first hand but found online: O'Neill was just named "Men's Hall of thr Year" for the second time in 3 years. In recognition of this they will be having a formal dance under the dome. They sponser the "Ms. ND" contest. Their mascot is "The Angry Mob" a word which comes from the Latin word "mobilis" found in the dorm motto"mobilium turba quiritium"- "a crowd of inconsistant citizens making a loud noise(from Horace's 1st ode)." Aside from airconditioning, and an elevator, they have 2 24-hr. lounges(big screen tv, surround sound, pool table, foosball, ping pong), study rooms, kitchen, excercise and weight room, section lounges with cable tv, laundry, and Spanky's Pizza. Football teams from O'Neill and Keough play each other for the Grace Cup(currently in O'Neill's possession). Aside from all this, they have a bloody hand in their coat of arms, what more could you want? It would be nice to hear from those with first hand experience.

people from keenan, can we build lofts in our dorm? The Keenan webpage says you cant loft the beds, but in the picture of student rooms, most of them have built lofts. Anyone know?

4Mom4 you did a great run down on O'Neill hall, what about Welsh Fam? Looking for more info on this dorm as it is one of the newer ones. (and very new to us old timers who graduated in the 80's!) Thanks!

4mom4 thanks!

O'Neill sounds great (though youtube video on it kinda scared me)

can't wait!

Lofting is permitted in Keenan. However, I'm not sure if freshmen are allowed.

First, Wowser, what did you see on Youtube that alarmed you. My eldest son in going to be a freshman at O'Neill in the Fall and now you have my attention.

Second, Irishcali, your daughter should definately go to the Freshman page on the dorm sponsored web site at:www.nd.edu/~welshhal/freshmeninfo.htm.
They have a great welcome page and at the bottom they ask you to send in $60 dorm tax and your t-shirt size for the orientation period t-shirt. They have email addresses for the RA's also. The dorm nickname is The Whirlwinds. They're apparently known for being a pretty athletic dorm. They host Welsh Family Feud and the Welsh Family Hall Dance Show. They have pretty much the same specs as O'Neill and were built at around the same time. In fact they're only two dorms over from O'Neill. They're right next to Keough and south of Alumni and Dillon. Pretty much surrounded by the male of the species. McGlinn is the only other girls dorm in the area. Anyway, I'm only repeating what they say much better on their web pages. Good luck to your daughter.

well they say a picture is worth a thousand words so might I suggest that you search O'Neill on youtube?

I don't think I can accurately describe it...

Wowser, I just checked it out. Not the most attractive image, but I'm going to assume that it was a video done by someone who thought drinking too much and being obnoxious were the essence of cool and that not everyone in the dorm has the same attitude. There's always a group like that where ever you go. For my son's sake I hope I'm right.

If you look on youtube for evidence of wild drinking at Notre Dame, it's EVERYWHERE in all the dorms. Not just O'Neill. It's college...like it or not, that's what happens. You don't have to participate in the partying if you don't want to.

I'm just very glad there was no internet when we were in school. My parents would have flipped!

4mom4, I hope you're right, too

I know that it's the reality of all colleges, but I hope being social doesn't mean intoxicating yourself and ... eating insects :)

Yes, the moms of those boys must be darn proud.

hmm would not drinking put me out of social scenes?

wowser- Don't woryy about it. There will be tons of things to do, groups to join and people to meet all without drinking. I know there were some threads on this subject awhile ago.

YUCK. But at least they had the good taste to use the Best Band Evah for the soundtrack.

Anyone have any info on Lewis?

Lewis used to be the standard home of Notre Dame Family hall, the summer family hostel, so we got to know it pretty well!

Some of the best things about Lewis are:

VIEWS: This was the first dorm built exclusively for women on the campus. Prior to co-education in the early 70's, it was used for graduate students, many of the school sisters. It was built to encourage a life of reflection, and, as such, is nestled in next to St. Joe's lake, very close to the Grotto. There are some gorgeous views of the dome, as well as the lake. In fact, I don't think there are any bad views in Lewis.

HUGE COMMON AREAS: Really nice ones. One of my favorites is the outdoor courtyard, which is private, yet has a gorgeous setting. There are great common rooms in the basement, plus a really nice, well-appointed lobby.

KITCHENS ON EVERY FLOOR: I'm pretty sure it is the only dorm on campus that has these. It also has bathtubs!

The disadvantage is that it is a little off the beaten track, but it has always had a strong sense of community.

Wowser, my son is going to be a freshman in O'Neill as I mentioned. He also does not have much interest in drinking. If you'd like to email me privately, I'd be happy to give you his email address(he has given me permission). It might be nice for both of you to know somebody in the same boat before you get there.

I'm a JuggerKnott

Interhall football champs 07!

russ08: "Yes, the moms of those boys must be darn proud"

I believe the proper interpretation is "Bless your heart! Your momma must be so proud!!"
