Dorms

I am interested in one of the social dorms for freshmen, and was told they were: Jennings, Broward, Yulee, Reid, Mallory and Rawlings. can anyone give me their thoughts on each of these?

I stayed in Broward overnight and I was less than impressed. The carpet was pretty nasty and it was a triple... I can't imagine living there for a whole year. I was on the first floor though and my friend was on the third, and his was a double. The room was the same size (which makes it noticeably bigger than the rooms in Hume) but it was MUCH cleaner. The lighting's kind of dim though. shrug

Maybe someone who actually lived there will have something more positive to say about it.

I'm in jennings for summer. It's the most social hall here for summer (by far) and the dorms aren't great, but they're air-conditioned and relatively clean. For fall I've heard that Broward is the most social hall for freshmen, followed by jennings and rawlings. All three halls are air-conditioned and in a good location (rawlings is probably the best location-wise because it's closest to the classes and right behind a bus stop). The dorms aren't great, but they're liveable and living in them is A LOT of fun! :) However, the noise can get a little annoying sometimes during the school week when you're trying to sleep/study etc...but you can always go to the library and try to avoid signing up for morning classes.

question about refridgerators. should roommates each purchase their own person fridge? or is it better to just get one fridge per dorm?

It's better to just get one fridge per dorm. I also suggest renting a fridge from UF because they deliver it to your dorm on the day you arrive and you can be sure that the fridge meets their regulations.

Just a correction, the frig rental is not done by UF but private companies. Also there are mixed reviews with the companies. Some students have a great experience and others not so good.

ya....i kno i got a letter in the mail today tellin to beware of scammers. eh i'll just buy one. it'll the same as renting might as well own it.

My reasoning for buying a frig was that renting one was like $60-80 and I bought a 4.2 cubic from walmart for $120, so it works out cheaper esp if you plan to stay on campus for more than a year.

I agree with gatormom, just buy the fridge. Wal-Mart, Target, and other stores usually have a sale on small fridges before the semester starts. I stayed only for one year in the dorms, I just brought it back home and gave it to my brother to use in his room.

Idk the dorms dont bother me at all. Im staying in Jennings right now, and its much cleaner and better than broward but broward has a better location and in this heat, I'm glad I picked broward for fall.

The lighting is dim, and I'm in a triple so the room seems darker because of the extra bed, but Broward is worse I think. I'm going to have to get another lamp I think.

It is always freezing though. My roommate and I havent quite figured out how to set the air conditioning so we can tolerate it. They are new though.

You should HAWK, have them adjust it.

i have a question. where would you put the fridge in a double room? underneath the desk? hmm....anyone have suggestions for a minifridge that has a big freezer? all the minifridges that i've seen have miniscule freezers that can't even fit an ice cream carton =(

you can put it next to the desk, next to a dresser, or under the bed if its a small fridge...i think the haier 4.0 cubic has a decent sized freezer if you take the ice cube trays out

ooh ok thanks. hmm...if i order it online will they deliver it to our dorms? or are our dorm addresses consider p.o. boxes? cuz some stores don't deliver to p.o. boxes

Does anyone know how high the beds can be lifted up to fit a fridge under there?

Its not considered a PO box. It like any house address. Packages are signed by the desk assistant thats at the desk. So size doesn't matter.

Someone in this forum should be able to measure for you.

are kitchen utencils such as knives considered a weapon?

yeah...you have to eat and cut everything with your fingers

Well if no one knows how high the beds go...can you tell me the size/height of your or someones refrigerator that fits under the bed to let me know something?
