Anyone have information on dorms for freshman? How do they select your dorms and roommates? Do they try to keep people in similar programs together? What are options for freshman dorms? Singles and doubles, or any other options? Just some of my questions if anyone has any info. Also, if anyone has info on the general atmosphere of different dorms. Thanks

Go to the CMU housing site. All the answers to your questions are there. You can also take a virtual tour of the different dorms.

You will get a form to fill out in a packet from housing once you are accepted. They will match you to a room mate from the answers on your form. VERY IMPORTANT that you get your deposit in as soon as you can because they are date/time stamped and that is the order that they assign housing. We got the deposit in early and my S got his first choice in dorm selection two years ago. You will get to right down your first, second and third choice for a dorm on the form. A lot of freshman pick New House. My S chose Henderson House because he wanted non substance housing.

My S got his #2 choice, Donner, and he returned his housing form about April 5 (he's a senior). Donner was a social dorm which was good for him. His first choice was Morewood. But I think most people would pick New House today, only a yr or so old w/ ac but small rooms. His Donner room was large in comparison.

I agree, as soon as you are sure you're going to cmu get the housing form in asap.

You select building that you want to live in and rank them accordingly. They TRY to keep you with someone who is at least in your school. I say try b/c i am in CIT and i room with a computer science person. Options for freshman dorming are many too many for me to say in the short time i have. the two best dorms for freshman are New House and Morewood E. they are both good, but a lot of ppl i know wanted New House as their first choice. I personally chose E tower b/c i didnt want to live in a tiny box. but you might be different. if you visit email me. I'll let you into morewood and you can see for yourself.(raysel7@hotmail.com). atmosphere of dorms are very social at first. TAKE advantage of that. b/c it ebbs Toward the end. I find it very positive. except for a few ppl.

I was a mechE. it's ok. the work load as strange as it sounds is not that bad. Which is contrary to myth. as long as you plan out your time, you will do fine. I made the HUGE mistake of not doing that the first semester...lets just say my hair started to fall out b/c of all the stress. now its much better b/c i plan out my time. the double you are looking for is also a great combo b/c that can be done in exactly 4 years with no overloading(going over the recommended credits).

the people over here are awesome. It has a great blend of Tech, super nerds, party ppl and everything in between. there are lots of clubs you can join as well. Whatever you like its here. and if its not just get 5 ppl to jion an you have a club

housing isnt bad...its kinda expensive tho. lots of my friends want to go off campus. I dont mind tho.

JOB OPP...THEY ROCK!!! everyone who is anyone comes to hire here. the biggest corp all come and small ones too. I think we were ranked best college for employment. which doesnt suprise me. basically you come here and you are gonna get a job. of course there are the exceptions(ppl with really low gpa's and that did nothing all 4 years), but most everyone gets jobs. The career center works hard to help you get internships as well. but most internships are from networking
exception to what i just said
I am a material science major...we are a very small dept. so not many employers come here...we have to go to them. but the name CMU carries you a long way. every mat sci major last semester either went to grad school or got hired.

do i love it here? HECK YEAH!!!!! I love CMU so much. i know many ppl who say that. cmu rocks there is no doubt about it. pittsburgh has some stuff to do but it is no NYC. the prof are all really nice, they love to talk to you. so much opps are here its amazing. I am so happy i chose cmu
