Dorms?

I was accepted for early decision.
And i just wanted to know what the freshman dorms are like?

when i visited they looked just okay...not really anything special. liveable and certainly nicer than others i've seen. they are just sort of dated. but that has to be expected i guess...

i think the best dorms are at uc davis - they are like brand new. but i have heard that there will be some new facilities in the future? im not sure how long it will take for them to complete it though.

The dorms at SLO are fairly generic inside. Very pretty from the outside. check out this link: Residence Hall Descriptions

The campus is really compact and the frosh dorms put you within 10 min or so walking distance from anything else on campus.

I forgot to add that there is a suite style living option for freshmen where I think just 4 people share a bathroom but these don't offer a common room for rec or study. The other frosh dorms do.

For Fall 2008 students, the Cerro Vista Apartments will definitely be open for incoming freshman!!! Be sure to check them out whenever you scope out housing because they are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

You get your own private room, a kitchen, living room, 2 baths, and 4 people total. It's great!!!! :)

Please join my group on Facebook for incoming fall 2008 students! It's a great way to become familiar with some new faces and maybe have a few friends come WOW week and the upcoming school year.

Cal Poly Incoming Class of '12

thanks!! :)

Where did you get your info about Cerro Vista, is that def, I know you can't apply for housing until Feb 1 for ED, is that online only?

Yes, according to the Housing department it is definite. You can view some cool pics on the Housing website at Housing and Residential Life, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo

Freel free to call Housing with any questions at 805-756-1111 and I thiiiiink it's extension 5. I find myself calling Cal Poly almost on a daily basis. Sometimes I just think of stupid questions to ask just because I love calling. :S

Oh and I forgot to answer the question you asked in your e-mail! I do believe that freshman in Cerro Vista will have access to all of the dining halls and restaurants of course, but the apartments do come with kitchens where you could have some of your meals as well. Like maybe cereal or waffles in the morning but then you could go to a dining hall at lunch for a sandwich and salad. I dunno.

Hope that helps!

And as for Feb 1st, I strongly recommend doing it online. Cal Poly prefers it to be done online, actually.

:)

I'm pretty sure that all of the residence halls and Cerro Vista may require some sort of meal plan w/ meal blocks and flex dollars. I know it's definitely possible to eat on campus if you choose to regardless of where you choose to live.

For sophomores/transfers at Cerro Vista no meal plan is required, mainly because they have kitchens. I haven't heard anything about freshmen living in Cerro so I don't know about that.

are you allowed to loft beds to save space?

i'm not sure about cal poly's policy on that...

Saabicia,

I followed the Facebook link, but I'm new to the site, so how I do I join the group?

you have to be in the cal poly network to join.

join that first then the group

Yeah it's been giving people a lot of trouble. To join the network, click on Networks up at the top of your Facebook homepage and then click on Join a Network. Under Network name, type in Cal Poly. Once you've joined, it should tell you that it's sending a verification e-mail. It took me and a couple other people multiple tries before the e-mail finally came. Good luck! :)

about the loft bed.. you can bring a cement block or something to raise the bed they provide you with and that's about it.

uughh bummer.
whatever.

the dorm rooms are so small.

ya they are, but who knows.. maybe some of the new dorm buildings will be open for us in the fall and they'll be bigger.. hopefully :)

new dorm buildings? fill me in.

are you talking about poly canyon? or cerro vista?

from what i was told when i took a tour in november, they're building new dorm buildings so that they'll have enough so all freshmen can be guranteed housing. from what i understood, all of the building won't be complete finished until fall 2009, but they're opening in stages so some of them should be open by fall 2008.

but they're for sophomores. when we're going, they're opening the current sophomore housing, cerro vista, to freshman to alleviate the housing crunch. the stuff that will be completed in 2009 is poly canyon, and they look niiiiiiiice. not finished, but verrrrry nice. :)
