Dorms

I just got my accepted students packet today (yay!) and noticed the form where I am supposed to rank dorms. The thing is, I don’t know anything about the dorms other than what the map shows of their placement on campus, so I was wondering if people could tell me anything they know about them. What are the rooms like? What makes one dorm building different from another? Etc. Also, I’ve been accepted into the honors college; what are the advantages/disadvantages to living on an honors floor? I know that it would limit my dorm choices, but are there any other disadvantages? Thanks.

yaah, on your packet...finally! dorms...really a matter of opinion, and that's EXACTLY what you'll get here, now that you've asked. as when others have, there will be differing opinions. the usual freshman dorms are Anderson and Letts, which are actually connected. they are fun and social, with Anderson thought to be a little more raucous. there are louder vs quieter locations. north side, i believe is quieter. McDowell is nice, near a little stream and houses the athletes, i think. distance is no issue, as AU, being a city campus is only 84 acres and everything is an easy walk, except for the wind which crosses over the elevations in wind-tunnel fashion. (but that feels good as heat and humidity build!) the honors question will be favored by those responding who are on it! my question would be, do you have a CHOICE..honors floor or not? if so, you need to think about how you want(or don't want) early exposure to your potential new friends and your new college world. hope this helps. CONGRATS on honors acceptance!
i thought they seemed like decent dorms, with a lot of built-ins. i've said this before, be sure to put your deposit in SOON, as triples happen for many kids. when we had move-in day, i was amazed at how many kids had temporary triples, and the problems of adjusting to 3 in a space for 2. in my d's experience at least, the hall bathrooms were a problem....poorly cleaned ! and since floors are co-ed, and the kids usually agree to have guys and girls use them together to make it more convenient, it NEEDS good cleaning. all-in-all, tho they were nice. AC, carpeted. many kids start the apartment thing, tho by sophomore and certainly junior year.

Thanks; yeah, now that I look at stuff again, it looks like I might have to live on one of the honors floors.

So I'm lost on the Housing website!

Are you saying that the honors halls are different from the normal ones? I definitely want to stay in the honors hall, and I think my choices are Letts (because of the fitness center..I love working out), Anderson, and Hughes.

Are the honors halls suite style? I don't know how I feel about sharing showers with guys, no offense haha.

Is there a building that's particularly advantageous for the SIS, or will most of my classes be in CAS the first year anyway?

By the way, anyone have pictures or floorplans? I've not been able to find anything except really close up pictures of beds. Are they a lot smaller than most dorms?

From what I gathered from the admissions packet, there are honors floors in those three halls; as far as I know, they're standard doubles with hallway bathrooms, but I think there are some non-freshman dorm(s) with suites or private bathrooms. Hopefully the bathrooms will still be single sex (officially the would, I presume, but I mean un-officially) or at least have those showers where there's the shower part and a curtained off changing part. Looking at a map, I don't think that any dorm is especially advantageous for SIS, but I believe Letts is technically the closest.

I live on the honors floor in Letts. Just to start off, the work out room in the basement of letts is 5 rowing machines, 3 tread mills, and 2 bikes. If you want to work out, you're going to go to the main gym. The honors floor is exactly like every other floor: no suites, no sharing of showers, nothing at all different. Yes you do have a choice but I HIGHLY suggest it. Almost all of the people I hang out with are in the honors program and, as for freshman, I think most honors kids would be in the same boat. Most floors aren't very close, but honors floors tend to spend lots of time together in the common room. If you are looking for a quieter area, go to north side. I'm surprised by the reputation the honors kids on south side have for being "partyers." While there are plenty of people who drink there's the same amount who like to study together and go out on the weekends and have clean fun. As for closest location, don't worry about it. No matter what major, you're going to be taking classes all over campus. Also, a lot of classes for one specific major aren't always offered in that school's building. PM me with private questions.

i hope i didn't make anyone nervous about my bathroom comment! as you all know my kid and i LOVE AU but wanted to give you a fair answer. she said the cleaning staff does a poor job, and in their hall's case agreed to some co-ed use of bathrooms. (i have no idea if that meant showers! :o )
scarolina~ NO! the dorms are not smaller than most! ( the smallest i've heard of to date are at UDel...9x9, i think!)

The smallest dorm I ever saw was at Wake Forest. I mean tiny!

My daughter is a senior at the University of Chicago and they vote on whether the bathrooms will be coed. Her hall has agreed every year and it doesn't seem to bother her at all.

By the way, my son accepted online last night we we paid the deposit. He's AU bound!

Yaah! Good For Your Son, Ronda! Both Au And He Will Benefit!!!!! :)

Yaah! Congratulations To You And Your Son! He And Au Will Benefit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

oops! i had trouble with the posting, so i re-did it! well, i mean it!

ronda, how does one accept online?

ecapp~ you accept the financial award online. you go down the various awards, saying accept/decline as you want. my d accepted the offer of admission in person, at the accepted kids' overnight in early april.

so i was looking at the floor plans of dorms at au today, and i realized that the dorm that i have to stay in, Letts, looked different on paper than McDowell, which i stayed at last summer. the main difference was that mcdowell had a space marked out of the room which was probably for that nifty wooden wall thing. letts didn’t have it on paper. do all the dorms at au have that shelving space, or is it exclusive to leonard and mcdowell?
