Dorms

It’s kinda hard to describe. The freshmen have the marketplace which is typical all you can eat fare like pasta dishes, salad bar, pizza, burgers, and entrees like fried chicken, roast beef, fish, etc etc. Then there are restaurants on campus like subway, mcdonald’s, chick-fil-a, the loop (diner style), the dillo (mexican), alpine (sandwich shop/deli), blue express (southern cooking), twinnie (cafe/sandwiches), etc. And finally, you can order on food points stuff like pizza, italian, sandiwches, burritoes, greek cuisine, indian cuisine, chinese cuisine, TGI fridays, etc etc.

The easiest way to find out really is to come to Duke for a visit and try out some of the food.

No easy way out for me since I am an international so I have to depend on you guys! :D

I hate when pre-frosh come and eat McDonalds. People, if you come, don’t do that.

Yeah, sorry if I wasn’t clear. Don’t come to Duke and eat fast-food. It’s franchised and will be guaranteed to taste the same whether you get it at Duke, in Amsterdam, or in Beijing. If you come, why to find a student (stay with one or find a friend) and ask them to show you their favorite place or something.

SBR, your earlier post was perfect. I was just agreeing with and adding to it. :)

Thanks phpfan :)

I meant “try to find a student (stay with one or find a friend) and ask them to show you their favorite place or something” in my earlier post. Apparently I can’t spell…

p_hp-fan and sockpuppets replies are the best in this thread. note that southgate and gilbert addoms (GA) do NOT have whole building air conditioning. note that the “wellness dorm” houses people who live a “clean lifestyle” so you’ll be in disneyland in that dorm. what duke and others seldom mention is that the FIRST consideration on east campus re:dorms is that there is a train track next to the campus that is TREMENDOUSLY noisey. it is close to southgate and GA. With no A/C, in those dorms, prepared to being woken up at 2 or 4am until you get used to it. only blackwell, randolph and bell tower have whole building ac. unless you are from the tropics it is fairly miserable for 2 to 6 weeks, then it’s ok.

What does the housing app usually ask for? Do we get to express interest in a particular dorm at all, or is it just AC/no AC and then they randomly assign?

housing asks 3 or 4 basic behavioural questions like, do you usually go to bed early/late, do you study with music/ or noise (not sure about that one). they dont ask about ac. unless you have some specialized interest in a group that is in one particular dorm (such as the ‘wellness dorm’), or a special need that physically requires special treatment – then its random. you only get AC if you have a physicians note that it is required (asthma etc). they say the assignment to a dorm is random, and for the most part it probably is, but if you don’t think randolph/belltower has a higher concentration of legacy or, hmm, high profile students then you probably think wall street has been promoting based on merit. that said, don’t think poorly of those in the AC dorms because most ended up there just as randomly as you will end up wherever you get assigned…and yes, any one of you could end up in those dorms too. no AC and trains is miserable and then you get used to it. it’s a shared experience like tenting for tickets. the only problem i’ve had is that Duke seldom every talks about it openly and has chosen over the years to never do anything about it.

^well to be fair, it’s kinda hard to move a train track :stuck_out_tongue: but I see what you mean…

I was in Southgate for a night for BDD and thats right next to the train tracks…I didn’t really think it was that big of a deal, but maybe that’s because I was dead tired and it was only one night.

P.S. Southgate has its own (crappy) indoor basketball court :DDD

Can someone tell me more about Jarvis please? Pros and Cons

I’ve read before that in the winter the rushes for the bus are pretty miserable. Is it true? Like, how long would it take for someone to get from the Campus Union to the bus stop?
What I know about the bus system:
[Duke Parking and Transportation: Duke Buses](http://parking.duke.edu/buses_vans/bus_sched/index.php)

Sorry, I know there is a bus thread, but I was wondering about it in relation to the dorms.

Also, has anybody ever lived in Brown? If so, what was it like?

You don’t have a say in which dorm you get… so there’s no need to get your hopes up about getting into a “good” dorm. Every dorm has it’s advantages.

I thought I was going to hate living in Epworth. It’s small (<60 students) and off the main quad… but I absolutely LOVE it! We have an awesome porch; our hallways are huge; and a lot of us hang out together. Make an effort to get to know the people in your dorm, and it won’t matter which dorm you live in.

east campus is pretty small, so getting anywhere on the main quad to the bus stop is pretty much a non-issue. I lived on a main quad dorm though, so I can’t speak to how hard the walk is from the “backyard” (blackwell/southgate/randolph/etc.)
but as for that link, the bus schedules are actually super helpful during the winter, especially at night and on weekends when buses don’t run as often. you can check when a C1 is going to come and wait in a nice heated building rather than freezing at the bus stop until one gets there!

Walking from the East Campus Union to the bus stop takes about 2-3 minutes, depending on how fast you walk, if you live on the main quad. From the “backyard”, it’s probably a little longer, but not by much.

The bus runs during the time schedules shown in the link, but anytime the bus isn’t running, you can always call Safe Ride, and a van will come to pick you up, and go anywhere on the duke campus.

Don’t get attached to a dorm or freak out about where you’re gonna live. You literally have 0 control, aside from Wellness Dorm Brown or Music Dorm Pegram, its all allocated randomly

Do athletes get special dorms?

Yes. Basketball players are in Bassett, the football and field hockey teams are in Randolph, etc. But these are only the freshmen, so you can still be placed in these dorms.

**** its marion, such a ****ing crazyyyy cameron crazie
