Dorms!

As long as the boys next door are cute!
I’m thinking about doing an overnight stay within the near future so hopefully I’ll be able to see the atmosphere firsthand.

^ EXACTLY! hahaha. I want to plan an overnight visit, too!

shay - every other room being another gender isn’t too unusual any more, although by wing or floor is still more common for obvious reasons (hall baths). With the suites (I mean the ones where same gender shares the central bath) having every other suite set being a different gender is a non-issue.

Frankly, to me coed within the room or suite, while a nice ideal in a neutered society, still strikes me as fairly unrealistic on the whole, and probably overly progressive. Even people that have opposite gender (non-romantic) roommates outside of college sleep in separate rooms. Anyway, not an issue at Truman or hardly anywhere else.

i probably would feel more comfortable if it was gender by floor because then i wouldn’t have to worry about how i look every time i step out of the door! lol

I did a Google search and there are apparently about 30 colleges that do the co-ed within rooms thing. Chicago and Stanford two of the more prominent. I am telling you, first rape that occurs, drunken or otherwise and there will be trouble. Apparently it was largely driven by these ulta-PC schools’ need to cater to the GLBT community. Trust me, I don’t care if anyone is gay or anything else like that, but this is just ridiculous.

No, I wasn’t saying that Truman has mixed gender dorm rooms. I don’t know anything about Truman at all (but later posts seemed to say that Truman doesn’t have them).

When I was in college, I lived on an all-female floor, but I found that that didn’t mean that there weren’t guys visiting the floor. Even though the bathroom was all-female, I might have to pass guys on the way to the shower. So, unless there are limited visiting hours, even an all-female floor probably has guys hanging around. Again, a suite-type dorm room addresses this problem, because you are sharing your bathroom only with your suitemates, and don’t have to worry if you feel uncomfortable walking down the hall to the shower.

Mixed gender floors (not rooms or suites) have been around for 30 years or more, and apparently are no big deal (or even preferred) by many college students.

I’ve never personally experienced a coed dorm bathrooms, but several dorms at the Univ of Chicago have them, and apparently the students who live in those dorms don’t seem to think it’s a big deal at all. Also, the school offers plenty of dorm options that don’t have coed bathrooms (including the option of single-sex floors), so students have the option of living in the type of dorm that feels most comfortable.

Personally, I have no problem with mixed gender rooms–live and let live, but as I said earlier, I think less than 2% of students at the U of Chicago chose them, so I doubt they are going to become the norm anytime soon.

Every student should feel comfortable with their dorm situation–no one should feel forced into a living situation they find uncomfortable. I’d expect that any student seriously considering a school would also look carefully at the dorm options offered, to make sure that they would feel comfortable.

kiterunner18 - when do you plan on doing an overnight? I talked to my admissions counselor, and he said they don’t really have an itinerary for over night stays. So, I’m very curious as to what the host would plan. (He said the host plans the activities for the night?)

I’m not really sure. I know a few people who go to Truman, so I might just stay overnight with one of them and they plan the rest? I’m not really sure… wish they did have an itinerary!

Me too. Out of complete curiosity, do you think hosts ever take overnighters to parties?

mmm, I think it kind of depends. The hosts that I’m considering probably would - it’s important to me. I want to see what options for fun there are on campus :)

I agree with you. I’d really hate to get stuck with a host that is a total book nerd because I’m not like that. I’m going to college for my education, but also for the social aspect. So, it’d be nice to see the other aspects before I decide, particularly with Truman in the middle of nowhere.
