Dorms

Can someone give me a breakdown of the various dorms and what each one is mainly know as?

I want to find out what are the "best" dorms to live in.

Daniel

Any of the honors dorms will be the best.

I’m going to be in business so I was wondering if there is a specific dorm that most McCombs students live in.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/569910-university-texas-dorms.html

there’s a lot of good info in there.

San Jacinto and Duren: They are generally considered the best dorms. They are the two newest and all rooms have private bathrooms, responsive A/C controls and such. San Jacinto also has what’s considered the best on-campus eatery downstairs and is right next to the stadium and right in between the gyms. Duren is kind of far away from a lot of people’s classes, so it’s usually for people who “have to” live on campus and have a private bathroom in a new building, but didn’t apply for housing early enough to get San Jacinto. People say it’s so hard to get into San Jacinto as a freshman, but I applied on the last day in October (last day to get scholarships, why wouldn’t you?) and got a sweet room with an amazing view of downtown. The bus stop is right outside and they just got a new big flat screen in their tv lounge.

Brackenridge, Roberts, Prather: These are old in a “good” way and have a nice little court yard in between where I’ve roasted marshmallows and tailgated before with friends who live there. These were my next choices after San Jacinto and still would be if I did it over again. Brackenridge has some single rooms and B and R have a significant sophomore population while Prather is mostly freshmen.

Moore-Hill: Old, but not in a “good” way. Moore-Hill has a good sense of community and some people have views of the pool at Gregory Gym. The people that live there all swear it’s the best dorm ever, but it’s my least favorite on this side of campus. I guess you have to live there to get it.

Jester is my next choice after San Jacinto and BRP because it’s so convenient. You have a bunch of eateries downstairs and even some classes are taught in it. The rooms are being renovated by section, so some are actually very decent and others are noticeably dated (though they may be done by the time you get there). The new lobby in Jester West looks pretty good, too. The only problems with Jester is that a lot of people who applied for housing last minute end up there, so your neighbors can be hit-or-miss.

Honors Quad: These are old, but I guess they would also be old in a “good” way. Your neighbors are all honors kids, which is a plus. The location isn’t ideal for some people, but these are definitely a solid choice.

Kinsolving and Littlefield: These are the all-girl dorms. I think Kinsolving was designed by the same person who designed Moore-Hill because they’re both awful and have tiny rooms. They both have eateries in them, but only Kinsolving is old in a “good” way.

Simkins: This dorm is all-male and far away from everything except the engineering school. 'Nuff said.

Private off-campus dorms:
Dobie is a good choice because it’s so close and has a little mall downstairs. Plus it’s where Michael Dell started Dell Computers.

The Castillian is a pretty good choice, too, but stay away from University Towers. A lot of people on here will talk about how great it is, but it’s totally the trashiest place imaginable.

There is no specific dorm where McCombs students (or any college) gather. You’re bound to run into some McCombs students in any dorm. Just choose the ones you like the most.

Another question, I paid the housing fee back in October, but I wasn’t accepted into UT until this past Thursday. Does that mean that I have a better chance of getting into San Jacinto, or because I got accepted so late I am pushed to the back of the line?

Nope, your place in line for housing was reserved by the $50 housing application fee you paid in October. You’re in good shape.

Is San Jacinto made up of mostly freshman?

Me and My friend both go to the same high school now and have both been accepted and are planning to room together . What are our chances to get San jacinto? She paid her housing fee like the first day it was available to and I did towards the end of
2009. Our housing choices match exactly, what are the chances we will get San jac?
