Dorms!

Hi!
I just need a bit of advice as to what dorm to pick for next year. I’m going to be at the college of arts and sciences. I wanted to know which dorm is better for meeting people, has the best bathroom situations, and isn’t to far from classes.

Warren and West are the best for meeting people. Warren is closest to most classes for people in CAS, SMG, COM, etc. West is closer to CGS. Walking from West to CAS probably wouldn’t be much fun in the winter. Both West and Warren have bathrooms that you share with the other people on your floor (a separate ladies room and men’s room).

Does Warren have a dinning hall?

Warren, West, and Towers all have dining halls. Warren and Towers are close to CAS but West is pretty far off. It might not seem like a big walk when it’s warm, but it’s painful when it’s cold. Warren is across the street from CAS. All three of these dorms have bathrooms you share with the entire floor. Hojo is also close to CAS and each room has a private bathroom. Because you share a bathroom with the floor in West, Towers, and Warren, the cleaning staff cleans them. In Hojo you’re on your own. However, the dorm does provide you with free toilet paper all year long. Hojo does not have a dining hall but it has a cafe.

im undecided between warren and towers any more insights? im majoring in cas

Well, both have a dining hall, although Warren has a bigger dining hall. Warren is also across the street from CAS. Towers is only slightly farther.

Jnd, distance-wise, both Warren and Towers are very accessible for SMG/CAS/SED/SAR/ENG kids. The main difference is that Warren is both larger and a bit more social than Towers. It’s louder but still not unbearably so in any way. Warren also is right on Commonwealth Avenue, while Towers sits on Bay State Road. Towers has single-sex floors, while Warren has both all-girls & coed floors. They both have dining halls. Towers opens earlier on weekends and has good burritos. It’s tinier by far. Warren is the second biggest dining hall on campus (to West) and has more choices. The rooms are similar in size, but set-up differently too. If you want to have higher chances of being friends with your floor, go with Warren. If you want to likely make select friends on your floor in a quieter environment, pick Towers.

Towers also has smoothies during breakfast.

Earlier I was making a pro/con list for Shelton and Towers and smoothies were a big factor in it.

Aww, I love smoothies. That’s what you get for living in warren, i guess.

does warren have a gym or any workout facilities

There’s a little gym on the 4th floor, just bunch of cardio machines, but it’s convenient so I go there more often than to FitRec.

what’s the third closest building to CAS? &, say…the most reasonably quiet. but not completely unsociable. with-preferably-private bathrooms. [it looks like that document posted in the last ‘dorms’ thread had ‘private bathrooms’ listed for almost every residence hall…is that accurate?]. & relatively spacious rooms.

heh…i’m just sort of wondering if there is a place that fits my criteria? or am i doomed to compromise? : P

Shelton would fit that description, but good luck getting in as a freshman.

Maybe try HoJo (575 Commonwealth Avenue). It’s mostly triples with private bathrooms.

The dorms you’re most likely to get into as a freshman are West, Towers, Warren, and maybe Hojo. Warren is across the street from CAS. Towers and Hojo are about the same distance away from CAS. It’s a 5-10 minute walk to CAS. Out of those, Hojo is the only one with private bathrooms. I got in as a Freshman and got Freshman roommates. Hojo is not sociable. People keep their rooms closed and it’s incredibly quiet. Even if you’re playing music people can’t hear it anyway. Since it used to be a hotel, the walls are pretty thick and the private bathrooms are nice. It’s not that people are mean. Everyone is rather friendly, but you have to go out of your way to make friends with them since most of your neighbors are upperclassmen (second and third year).

so Hojo is the only one with private bathrooms?

Out of all the dorms you’re likely to get in as a first year? Yes. It has a private bathroom inside your room. Also, Hojo has A/C while most other dorms do not. All dorms have heating, though.

so, when is considered late when it comes to signing up for dorms/getting priority? have most people already done that or do i still have plenty of time?

Don’t worry about time. If you’re trying to get into a dorm that’s mostly Freshmen, you’ll get in. Towers, West, Warren, etc. Hojo too. I turned in my form a little late and still got into Hojo. Upperclassmen usually move onto better dorms. But the upperclassmen have barely started room selection. I myself won’t go until Tuesday (I’m a second year).

Let’s say your friend is going to BU as well. Can you request who want to dorm with?
