My D is going to be in East dorm. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with that dorm?

Thanks but I was really wondering about the atmosphere and whether living with upperclassmen makes it easier or harder for Freshmen to adjust?

It’ll probably be a bit harder at first, when everyone in the freshman dorms have an easier time finding friends, but if you look around it really isn’t that hard to meet new people. Some people swear by the friends they made in the freshman dorms, but I know just as many people who hated Barrows. Personally, I was really close to a group of people my freshman year, just because we all happened to live next door to each other, but then when I moved into a normal dorm I found I no longer cared enough about them to even walk across campus. I value the friends I’ve made that I actually had to search out, that I actually have something in common much move.

Thanks for your feedback. I just want her to get off to a good start.

My daughter lived in a quad at North a a freshman. Most of her hall were upperclassmen, who primarily stayed to themselves, but she and her quadmates made friends with about 5 other freshmen who lived in North. They became pretty tight. They met during Orientation week when they were all wandering around seeing who else was there in the primarily upperclasman dorm-- so maybe keeping a door open and playing some music might be a good strategy that week to ferret out other freshman in East!

Her boyfriend lived in Dascomb so she had a bit of exposure to that atmosphere. She says that although she thinks she missed some of the community aspects of living in a freshman dorm, that was offest by the ability to study in her room-- apparently not an option in her mind in the frenzy of the freshman dorm. . . but that may be just her. Anyway, she was very happy living in North, happy with the friends she made there, and happy with her choice to go the traditional dorm route. Hope this helps!

PS- Since there were a lot of singles on her hall, she says she NEVER had to wait to use the showers and that the bathrooms stayed clean and user-friendly relatively speaking!

Does anybody know anything about the setup in Kade House? I have yet to figure out where the showers/rr are. I know that the diagram on the website is not accurate since the refurb in 2008. THX

My S was in East last year and had a wonderful experience. Yes, the first year students all stick together, but the older students were very helpful and gave advice about teachers, and where, what and when information. My S is moving to be closer to the conservatory, but being in East was great. Your D will be right accross the street fromt the cafeteria which is so nice on those very cold days.

Were there enough freshmen in East so he had kids to hang out with–especially in the first week?

THanks Hunt Mom–just saw your post.

The shower/rr in Kade is located in the middle of the floor. There is a hallway on either side with doors that go right in.

Well, it was so big I had assumed that meant rec room. THX. Dumb me.

No problem. Let me know if you have any other questions about Kade. I lived there my second year.

After our D’s experience at Dascomb during freshman year, I would have to say any other dorm would be an improvement. Note to Oberlin: probably shouldn’t have sophomore RAs.
