I just received my acceptance letter to Howard University for the Spr. '11 semester as a transfer student! I'm interested in on-campus housing and wanted to know which dorms people recommend.

Thanks in advance for your input.

What year are you?

@Seke - Thanks for your response. I will be entering as a Sophomore. Additionally, I’m 25 and I plan on being involved on campus. I have also been looking at places off-campus although I would like to have the full college experience. I have been living on my own since I was 20 so I know I will have some adjusting to do by living on campus.

Hmm. If you’re a girl, I’d recommend the Annex. It’s a fairly new, on-campus, clean, air-conditioned, all female dorm with its own dining hall (the food there is MUCH better than the food in Blackburn). Many freshman and sophomores live in the Annex. I have friends who live in there now and love it but they do claim that it’s very easy to feel isolated. The rooms are suite-style; there are two double rooms, one single room, and one or two shared bathrooms.

If you’re a guy, I’d recommend Carver. It’s an air-conditioned, all-male, off campus dorm and I’ve heard it’s pretty nice. I don’t think it’s too far off campus. Most (if not all) rooms are singles.

Meridian Hill is a co-ed, primarily sophomore dorm but there are a few freshman, and a sprinkling of juniors/seniors living there. I’ve heard the living conditions are less than desirable and it’s a good ten blocks from campus so you’ll end up taking the shuttle to get to campus pretty often. It is conveniently located right near Columbia Heights where there are a few good restaurants (Potbelly, Five Guys, Panda House, Chipotle, some other local restaurants) and the Target, Staples, Best Buy, Marshalls, and a few other stores.

If you qualify for the honors program, you may have the opportunity to live in Howard Towers East which is “off-campus” (but…not really, you’ll see once you get to Howard that it’s really in an almost perfect location), apartment-style location. Howard Towers East is mainly for grad students and a few sophomore honors program. You’ll have a kitchen and bathroom that you share with one or two other people. Howard Towers West is for juniors/seniors and is the same set-up.

You also have the option of living in Slowe but I’m not too familiar with that dorm.

If you’re interested in non-university off-campus apartments, look into UTC (University Towers Center? or something to that effect).

Thanks Seke. I’m a guy so I will choose Carver on my housing app. I like the fact that most of the rooms are singles. Thanks for all the information, it was very helpful. I wanted to make a visit to the campus but I’m not sure I will be able to do that so this information is great, especially in regards to how far some of the dorms are from campus. Thanks again.

I just found out that I will be dorming in Howard Plaza Towers - West. Can anyone give me some insight on how this dorm is?

It says that my room type is - Double Studio. Does this mean that I will be sharing a room with someone?

Thanks in advance for any info!!
