Dornsife - Physics/Computer Science

My son has been accepted as undecided at Dornsife. He had applied to CSE@Viterbi.

He could switch later on possibly but starting as Physics/CS is another option.

Anyone here in this major? Are the CS classes held jointly at Viterbi....is the faculty the same...basically was not prepared for it hence the query here.

Thanks!

Are the CS classes held jointly at Viterbi…

yes

…is the faculty the same.

yes

S is in the same boat.

There is another thread current “Switching from Dornsife to Veterbi” that answered a lot of question. I’m not smart enough to link it.

pixeljig, congratulations to your S2! But that acceptance as undecided major is a new wrinkle. He might very well be able to transfer into Viterbi if he still wants that. I believe he would need to talk to an advisor at freshman orientation this summer and start on the proscribed curriculum that CS majors all do. He will need to get a certain grade level in those classes (I’m sorry, I don’t recall) and reapply after one semester. I know this answer is vague, but I suggest calling Viterbi advisement for more info.

Same thing happened to my son. Applied to CS and was accepted as undecided. Good news is that he can take the same classes as the engineering students in the fall. (You need to work with Viterbi at the orientation this summer to do this). As long as your son gets a B average in both the engineering classes and in general, he will be able to transfer into Viterbi after the fall semester. Of course, you should verify this yourself before accepting the offer just so you understand it exactly. But it does seem straightforward and reasonable.

Yes, we came up with the same info. It does not sound too difficult. Seemed daunting at first just cause he was not expecting it.

Pixeljig: Yes, it seemed terribly depressing and daunting. We got the big white envelope and were so excited. Then we opened it and were depressed all afternoon. Then we got the email from Viterbi and saw that the transfer process was not intimidating at all, so we were back on Cloud 9. An odd 24 hours, but all is good now. He’ll make a final decision among all of his options next week, but we’re heavily leaning towards USC.

My D has been accepted under the psychology major… How hard is it if she wants to change her major to accounting or business?

I’m not sure about the answer to changing to accounting or business. You should be able to find the info on the USC business school website. There should be a section about transferring in. You might also call the Business school and ask. I’ve found the school to be very helpful, although they are very busy this time of year. Try emailing the business school associate dean of admissions as well. His or her email should be available on the website.

Awesome! 3 kids right here, maybe they can get in touch and connect.

USC is sons first choice even though he has a neat merit aid offer from both SCU and LMU. UCSD could become instate after 2 years since we are US citizens. Overall USC will be most expensive but still worth it I assume.
