Dotl

Hey guys,

Im going for DOTL tomorrow and I am really nervous because idk what I'm supposed to do there. Can you suggest some things/ share your experiences. One thing I don't feel like doing is attending classes because I think thats boring. Also need some inside on the food. Are we provided lunch or do we have to go to the restaurants. Thanks for the help guys. Need replies quick!

we went a few days ago.it was fun!
1st , there was this AWESOME breakfast buffet in the front entrance of the Rotunda…
with trays of fresh fruits, hot coffee, banana bread/big bagel/cute tiny muffins, cream cheese etc …all for you to enjoy.

then you go to your “school’s info session” + tour. everyone went to their “school” as Art+Sc or Arch or Nursing or Engineering

Lunch: sorry, there is no free lunch here. You can eat at anywhere you like: cafe or Newcomb dining hall or any places you like.there are some restaurants in a shopping center like place call The Corner, it is a short walk from the Rotunda/Admin buildings.
Our schedule was so tight, between tour & attend a class & tour dorms, that we didn’t really have time to eat properly…we were in a hurry! but I am sure if you don’t go to a class, you can free up some time for a “real lunch”.
so eat more “free” breakfast in case you don’t have much time for a good lunch.

some went to a class. some people went to financial aid. some went off to ‘student panel’ discussion.some went shopping etc.

And when you have a chance, be sure to tour the dorms.

it was chilly in the AM outdoors in the lawn, then nicer/warmer in the PM, so dress in layers
Plus wear comfy shoes…you’ll walk & walk & walk until you wish there are some kind of “star trek beam” that can transport you to where you need to go!

There are quite a few posts on the blog about what happens at DOTL and the schedule. Check them out!

[Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process](http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/)

BTW, you should really take advantage of the chance to sit in on classes. I hope you’re joking about finding class boring! You’ll be spending quite a bit of time in classes in college, regardless of where you wind up.

Hi Dean J,
we missed you & Cavdog on Monday!
we looked & looked & finally my kid said " she isn’t here & her dog isn’t here".
then i read your blog & realized you were out of town in a conference…we look forward to meeting you because we wanted to say THANK YOU in person!!!

There are a couple things happening at the same time, so I would try to plan out your day with the places marked on a map. Most things are close. Many students come with a parent and they split up and do different things - such as a student going on a tour and visiting the dorms, while a parent goes to a financial aid session.

You won’t be able to pick your dorm (unless you apply and are accepted into a residential college), but it is still good to see the different types.

The day I was there, you could meet students in front of Peabody and they would take you to lunch in a dining hall. My son liked that.

I’ll be there tomorrow as well. Can someone help me find the address of Emmer/Ivy Parking? Thanks and hope to see you there tomorrow!

The parking deck is setback about 200 feet from Ivy Road and from Emmett Road (Bus. Rt. 29), behind the Cavalier Inn hotel, at the northwest corner of the intersection. You can enter from either road.

You think sitting in a class will be boring? What do you think you’ll be doing if you come to UVA…?

the Emmet/Ivy parking is less visible on Emmet street,
~ make a LEFT onto Ivy st (traffic light there)
~ pass Cavalier Inn Hotel,
~ RIGHT at the next traffic light &
it will take you directly into the parking deck…
~ there is a name for this small street, i couldn’t remember.
We got there before 8am & there are lots of parking spaces.

@Dreambig92, by saying “One thing I don’t feel like doing is attending classes because I think thats boring”, I meant that its boring to attend classes on a college tour. I dont find classes boring otherwise. I just want to explore the college as a whole first, and I’ve attended classes at different universities and they’re all the same pretty much. I included that in my first post because I thought alot of you guys would recommend different classes i could attend.

It’s funny how people pick up the smallest things and feel that it’s necessary to make a negative comment about it when someone earlier has already said the same thing. Above all, their post has nothing to do with my original question. Thanks for posting!

@eduedm and everyone else: Thanks alot guys, your posts have been really helpful. And I read the blog that Dean J suggested, and I think I pretty much know what I’ll be doing tomorrow. Thanks again guys, really appreciate it. =)

my kid attended a class & afterward said
“boy, it was sooooooooooooooooooooooo ( insert word)”
LOL
then I asked " do you wanted to come here?"
replied " YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS "

If this was facebook, eduedm, i’d click “Like”.

Will try to fit in a class if I can. Thanks!

If you’re concerned about not having enough time, you can do what I did and skip the dining hall. Instead I went the the Pavilion (I think that’s what they called it) in Newcomb and ordered some sushi and a smoothie. Afterwards, I stepped out and ate on my tour.

Besides, the food at Newcomb wasn’t too great (I ate there the day before DOTL).

Also, try seeing if you can get a class past 3:00. All of the events end by 3:00. If you take a class later on in the day, you’ll get to experience a class and the other events.

My favorite part was the resource fair and the McIntire Presentation. The tour was informative, but if you want to see more than just a glimpse of the grounds, you might want to skip the tour and go on your own tour! On my tour, we only stopped at 4 places. The tours guides did more talking than anything else…but I can’t really blame them. UVa’s grounds are rather extensive.

If you know someone who currently attends the University, ask if he’ll give you a tour! I had my friend who attends give me a tour and it was GREAT! She got me into a residence hall and showed me around grounds within 30 minutes! That was definitely the highlight of my day!

One thing I’m particularly interested in knowing is the percentage of students from BioMed Major who get into Med school… or like the overall statistics of students from the university who get into med school. Because ultimately, my goal is to go there. Is there a specific place where I can find that?

When we went to DOTL last April, D sat in on the second semester of the 400 series chem course. She had a very strong chem background in hs and had decided beforehand if the material was familiar/easy to her, she would enroll in accelerated 800 series rather than 400 series; so, attending a class can actually be instrumental in helping select your fall courses. :)

One other thing…make absolutely certain you meet as many prospective students as possible while there. If you all do decide to attend, you can Facebook over the summer. It’s nice knowing a few people before you head off in the fall (true especially for OOS kids who may know virtually no one). D wound up meeting her current roommate at DOTL. They hit it off so well, they’ll be living together next year as well.

jc40,

I’m going in blind. As an OOS student, I’m going to essentially know no one. Hopefully I meet some kids at the summer orientation.

UVAorBust…You’ll enjoy orientation. If possible, I would encourage one or both of your parents to attend as well; the university offers interesting programs for the parents while their student is signing up for classes, etc. You’ll be housed overnight (last year at Hereford), so your parent will need to secure lodging. Our D had fun at the many late night activities during orientation. She was put in a nice single, too, which was great. She met quite a few friends during orientation.

I know you probably already know this, but there’s a FB group for UVA Class of 2015. There’ll be TONS of posts made throughout the summer and the threads vary from roommate requests to engineering majors to OOS kids from ____, etc., etc.; you should check it out daily. You can meet kids ahead of time that way as well.

Even though I don’t know you, you sound like a kid who might enjoy living at Brown residential college. You might want to investigate it further and do so quickly because I know living there requires the student apply. Let us know how you like orientation.

Are you kidding? You could run for office on your username alone at this point. :)

Ahh, thanks jc40 and Dean J.

I’m sure I’ll have a fantastic time at summer orientation. I’m kind of stuck on what I want to do for dorming. I think I’m going to request a hall style dorm. But Brown is still lurking in my mind. Who knows, maybe I wont get into Brown an have to make a decision. As long as I’m not in a single I’ll be happy.
