double degree

i'm interested in double degree.. violin performance and something else possibly.
i'm currently a senior... so when i apply, do i need to apply to two different departments? or can i just apply for music...
help? o_O
thanks :)

My opinion is that it matters a lot what the two degrees are. For example, violin performance and electrical engineering (ouch! That would be hard, I think). Violin performance and cinema? Hmmm, there's probably some very significant admissions angles in that combination since both the cinema and music schools are USC are superb, and very competitive.

Also, are you determined to graduate in four years? Do you bring any AP or IB or transfer credits with you?

I guess I'm trying to suggest that the most meaningful answer to your question will be highly specific to your individual situation.

yes i have some AP credits
i am a pretty good student...
with about 3.8 unweighted GPA and 4.1 weighted GPA
i'm thinking about violin and a biological science...
i'm pretty sure i can cut through with violin..
but what i am wondering is:
do i have to apply to two different departments?
when do i decide that i will actually double major?

My impression that it's harder to get into one of the professional/specialty schools than into the College; if you're accepted into Thornton you've been accepted into the College as well. If you're rejected frm Thornton you can still be accepted into the College as an undecided major. If I were you I'd ask reps from Thornton about applying into the College as well.

Figure out which one you want to do more and put on your application that as your 1st choice major, and put the one you also want to do as a 2nd choice.

I would think I would put violin as 1st choice if you really want to do it because it's really easy to add bio later, and I dunno about music. But it's up to you doesn't really matter I think.

You can't apply immediately for double major, you can mention in your app that's what you want to do but you'll be admitted to only one then you apply once you're accepted at USC.

That sounds like good advice.

If there is an audition/tape requirement for music majors, you can't get around it by calling yourself a bio major, and then adding on violin later. I would agree with the advice of putting violin as your first choice.

oh ok
thank you :)
