Double Major across Schools?

Hi everyone!

I applied RD to Georgetown this year (let's just pretend for the sake of this question that I will be accepted), and I selected Spanish as my major, which would place me in the College, or more specifically the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Linguistics. I am intrigued by the International Economics major in the SFS as well, and was wondering if it is possible to double major in these two areas, since they are in different schools.

Please let me know if this is possible. Thanks!

Unfortunately, you can’t double major across schools, which is a big disad for choosing there because I too want to double major [econ with international relations]

Is there any reason why they don’t allow this? It seems like, at least for the double major combinations that we have picked, that they are very closely related topics.

I wish I understood their logic…

Basically, when you get admitted into Georgetown, you get admitted into a specific school inside of Georgetown, and they are all pretty different. I wish they’d allow students to double major, and if I get in, this may be a very divisive reason why not to go there

Yeah, same here. Which is sad, because I really like Georgetown.

You can if you’re in the FLL - I would call their office to double check, but almost 90% sure you can - in fact, I know a couple kids doing French and Finance for example.

That’s because that is within the same college (Georgetown college) French is in the college and IR is in SFS: two different schools.

You cannot double-major across schools, as others have noted. However, the nice thing about languages is that you can load up on those classes regardless of what school you’re in; it’s really the coursework and accompanying proficiency that are important to employers, not so much having the formal major (unless you wanted to go into a linguistics-type field).

The reasoning behind this is that it would be impractical to complete two different sets of core curricula (each school’s is different) as well as two different sets of major requirements. There are usually enough workarounds possible - the "self-designed major is always the option of last resort - that it’s not too big of a hindrance.

FLL students can MINOR in business, but they cannot double-major between the FLL/College and the business school (finance being in the business school).
