Double Major - Acting/Writing

Hi I have a lot of questions about college...So, I'm a Junior this year, and to be honest I don't really know what college I want to go to. I'm not very particular about what college; I haven't dreamed of going to any particular college since I was little. I just know what I want to major in. I would like to have a double major (however ambitious that sounds). I've known since I was in the third grade that I loved to write and act, so I want to have an Acting/Creative Writing double major, however I do not know which colleges or universities will allow me to major in both at the same time, especially since Creative Writing as a college major seems to be relatively new in comparison to other majors. Does anyone have any suggestions where I will be able to major in both Creative Writing and Acting (or Drama/Theatre Arts) at the same time?

Thanks for the help!

A good many colleges will permit you to double major in these areas. In your case, that would probably involve an English Major (creative writing courses as part of the major or possibly a subspecialty track in creative writing)+ a Drama or Theatre Major. Relatively few colleges will offer an integrated major that specifically combines both of your interests, but very likely some courses in one major might meet some of the requirements of the other major, e,g., a creative writing course in playwriting course in the English dept. may count as a theatre course, or a theatre history course in the theatre dept. may count as an English course. It is difficult to suggest possible colleges with knowing your academic stats, financial considerations, and your personal preferences as to the possible “fit” (e.g., large vs. small, urban vs. rural vs. suburban, etc.) of particular colleges. Some schools with strengths in your areas of interest include Emory, Northwestern, Minnesota, Yale and there are probably many others.

School of Theater at Boston University has the Theater Arts track which might be just the ticket, speak to them.

Sarah Lawrence has both a strong writing program and a notable theater program. Students there have a lot of freedom to develop their own course of study.

You can double major in acting and writing at Emerson I believe. However, you would have to apply as a BA theatre studies with acting emphasis (meaning you would have to audition), and once you were in thats when you would declare the double major. Both Emerson’s acting and writing programs are highly renowned, so you get the best of both worlds. hope this helps!
