Does a double major in Business Data Analytics and Economics, Minor in International Studies sound good? Or double major in Business Data Analytics and Accounting, Minor in Economics. Also, if I want a different minor which one goes better with the majors?

Agribusiness Management
Communication
Computer Science
Would appreciate any comments and other ideas, thanks

Hi Steph,

I think it really comes down to what you want to do with your set of majors/minors as well as what your interests are. I’m a senior at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying Finance and Business Administration - whether that set of majors ‘sounds good’ or ‘goes well’ completely depends on the company I am talking to. One company might look and say I am well-rounded and another one might say I’m unfocused.

Can you give us a better idea of what kinds of career path(s) you were looking to do?

I was thinking market research analyst or business intelligence analyst. I would like to do programming if I ever get the chance. Or anything with technology really, I also thought about it more, so I narrowed it down towards this and maybe double major in Business Administration and Management Information System minor in Computer Science or double major in Business Data Analytics and Management Information System minor in Computer Science. Seems closer to my interests.

Ok great - well, from my experience, there are a ton of business positions that will place you in an analyst role of some sort where you would be heavily utilizing Excel, but not really doing any serious programming. Then there are obviously pureplay programming positions at software companies but that doesn’t seem to be exactly what you’re indicating. If you’re looking to do a half technical half soft skills route (similar to what I’m doing actually), then I honestly think either one of those would work for you. The vast majority of employers won’t really know/care exactly what the difference between ‘management information systems’ and ‘business data analytics’ is. So, it really more comes down to the overlap between classes and seeing if there are particular classes/teachers that would be useful to you.
If there’s a specific company you have in mind for any of those positions, it would be best to try to talk to someone from that company and get their opinion or see if there’s a lack thereof as I would expect.
