Double Major and a Minor?

Will Alabama allow me to pursue a double major and a minor? I start next year and I am contemplating doing this with Political Science, Philosophy, and Spanish…

Yes.

Yes, you can. However, you can only declare one major right now. Then after school starts, you can add the major and minor.

that said, be sure to look closely at the requirements to make sure that you will graduate on time. If at any point, you find that you can’t fulfill the req’ts of both majors and/or the minor, pick one major, finish that. You don’t want to get to the end of your four years with no major finished.

We were told that certain ones fit together particularly well i.e you don’t need as many classes because they have some or most in common.

My D is double majoring and minoring. However, since the majors are in different colleges, she will have to choose which school she wants her degree from. In her case, A&S or College of Communications.

You can actually get two different bachelor degrees if they are in different colleges. I don’t have time to find the link right now. I think one of the criteria is 150 hours minimum.

^^^My D was told that the only way to get two separate degrees was to have two majors and two minors.

Forgot to mention that the advisor recommended. Choosing a major and two minors rather than two majors and one minor. This would allow my D to take several grad level courses in her major.

@BigDaddy - It could vary by college but DS is currently working 2 separate degrees in two colleges(Bio A&S and ChemE Eng) and does not have 2 minors. You may want to have your D recheck. Like I said, could vary by area but wasn’t the case for DS. As for Grad level courses DS is also in University Scholars and is also working his Masters in Bio, so getting plenty of Grad level courses.

@mom2collegekids I actually didn’t plan on declaring a major until my sophomore year. I’m going in as undeclared in A&S. In this case, would it be a better idea to just focus on one major and minor in another, and just take classes in Spanish?

@MemphisGuy‌ I’m just going by what my D was told by an advisor.

I think that is a good idea…and if you get to a point where you know you’ll finish your major and minor and you still have space in your schedule to do more, then do so.

@BigDaddy - Understand that is what your daughter was told, was just saying she may want to check again to be sure. Could be that College of Communications has different rules but DS is doing two degrees in A&S and Eng without the double minor requirement.

Either way wont hurt to check again if she doesn’t really want the second minor or if it is causing overload.

Here is some info on multiple majors and multiple degrees:

MemphisGuy: The Biology Major does not require a minor.

OK. That helps to clarify. Thanks

You’re welcome. :)
