Double Major AND Considering Adding a Minor (African-Amer. Studies)

I'm a university junior (transfer student) and I'm already double-majoring in Anthropology and Journalism. I'm seriously considering adding a minor in African-American studies because those courses, for some reason, do not count toward my Anthropology degree (though they could count as electives).

I'm also really interested in Gender/Women's Studies, but...double-majoring AND double-minoring?? I'm not sure I could pull that off. That's the problem with being a liberal arts major: I'm interested in so many topics.

After graduation, I'm probably going to get into journalism. I already write for my college newspaper. One interesting thing my university (UT-Arlington) does is offer students Diversity Certificates, so I might be able to take courses in both AA and Women's Studies to satisfy the certificate.

You do NOT have to major or minor in something just because you’re interested in it. Everyone has different interests but they don’t all turn into a major or minor. There’s no reason you can’t just take African American studies and Gender/Women’s Studies classes without minoring in either of them. Sometimes, it’s even better to just take the courses you’re interested in without having to worry about filling particular requirements for a major or minor. If you find that you racked up enough classes to declare a minor, then fine, you might as well. But there’s no reason that you have to stress about finding something to apply these courses towards.

Thanks for the feedback, baktrax!

I get where you’re coming from. I’m thinking that I’ll most likely take enough classes in the AA Studies curriculum to be able to declare a minor, anyway, and I don’t want to just take a bunch of electives and not have them count toward anything. That’s why I’m leaning toward declaring the minor.
