Does anyone know if you can double major at UC Davis as a transfer student? I'm thinking about majoring in English, along with Linguistics. I applied for Linguistics, but I will complete all major requirements available for both majors before I'll transfer. I also looked at Davis' lower and upper division major requirements, and it seems like I would have to complete 24 4-unit courses at Davis, for both majors. This equals 4 4-unit courses (16 units) a quarter, which is a normal course load and would theoretically enable me to graduate in two years upon transfer. I'll have completed the IGETC before my arrival at UC as well.
Is it possible (not only in theory)?

I went in with one major. I think it would be better to apply for double major after your first quarter. That is what I am doing :)

Yeah, I only applied to one major as well. So its possible to declare a second major after your first quarter as a junior transfer at Davis? I know other UCs, like Berkeley, do not allow students to declare a major after completion of 90 units.

I believe after one quarter you can go to the departments and declare. (so if you get in fall you can declare winter)

I guess Davis is cool like that. As long as you have a plan and are in good standing and don’t exceed you unit cap you can apply for a double major or a change of major. Whether they want certain prereqs completed are another story and may affect whether they allow you to change your major. If you can, take any prereqs while completing your first major and then have enough units left to finsh your second major. You don’t want to take too many GE classes outside your majors if you are doubling.

The unit cap is 225 quarter units, right? Does Davis require any upper division courses/GE not part of a major program? Or can you only take major courses (and if necessary electives) upon transfer? I’ll have exactly 90 quarter units (102 with AP, but that does not count to any unit maximum, to my knowledge) after Spring quarter. I need 96 units for for majors. This should work, then.

Why not just earn an AA in Linguistics at Foothill and a BA in English at Davis? To spend extra time and money in the UC system for such a narrow major and field such as Linguistics isn’t worth it unless Linguistics is what you want to do as your primary goal.

@ flwrgrl yup - i’m taking pre-reqs for sociology at my CC next spring since I need 60 units anyway. And just in case I end up going davis and decide to double major.

I believe AP units do factor into the unit count - that’s how I ended up transferring to Davis with 107.5 units.

@michellaneous: I know AP units count… But to my knowledge, they cannot provide you with any disadvantages in terms of maximum units allowed.
@kmazza: Yeah, I’m having doubts about my future with a linguistics degree, hence I want to double major. I’m also thinking about maybe just changing major to English and minoring in Linguistics.
How easy is it to switch to a non-impacted major at Davis? Should it work?
