Double Major: Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering

Hi,

You may have heard this question a lot but I thought that I would ask it myself. What is your opinion on a double major with biomedical and mechanical engineering? I attend UC Davis, and the BME program here doesn't focus enough on ME, which is the reason why I am considering double majoring. My ultimate goal is to work on biomedical projects related to space explorations (I have read about ESA and NASA biomedical projects geared toward assisting astronauts in spaceflight) and if that doesn't work out, then I hope to work on prosthetic limbs.

My questions are
1) what is your opinion on a double major with BME and ME? Is it a good combination or should I choose one over the other?
2) If I choose only one, considering my career goals, which one do you think I should choose and why? What things may I be able to do with one and not the other?

Thank you very much!!

If it takes you an extra year to fulfill the requirements for both programs, I would advise against a double major. It might be better to do a B.S./M.S. combination if that is possible in 5 years at your university. If you have to choose one, you should choose the one that most interests you. Mechanical Engineering is more general and Biomedical has less traditional Engineering in its curriculum.

If I were advising one of my students on this, i would suggest that, all things being equal, Mechanical Engineering would give you more flexibility and opportunities in employment.

Good Luck!

I go to Davis too and am BME, I don’t have an answer but did you take Bim 1? I would talk to the guy who did nano engineering to see what he thinks since he talked about prosthetics and would probably be pretty helpful in figuring out what you should major in for what you specifically want

Another option is to minor in mechanical engineering.
