Double Major CAS-Steinhardt?

Hi, I just posted another thread about dorms about a minute ago, so if anyone who read that or really, anyone else, can help me here, that would be great.

So, I'll just give you the facts:
- I have been accepted and am enrolling as a new freshman, class of 2016
- I am a HEOP student
- I want to double-major in English at CAS and Vocal Performance at Steinhardt
- I have applied through CAS as a Music major and this is my current status
- Even though it's not vocal or even performance, I did this because I was told that if I applied through Steinhardt for VP I wouldn't be able to double major in English over at CAS
- Now, I'm reading contradicting information and I'd like to know just how badly I've screwed up

The question:
- Can I double major the way I want to, as a CAS? or
- Do I have to switch into Steinhardt and double major from there? And, if so,
- When should I ask to transfer to Steinhardt? or
- Heck, is that even possible for me?

Thank you for just getting through this, honestly. Any information will be EXTREMELY appreciated.

bump Some people don’t go past the first four pages…

No one? Really? =(

If these are your concerns, email NYU. I dont understand why people come on here with concerns like this, when so many people on here just speculate or really have no clue what they are talking about. Get the information from the UNIVERSITY, who cannot only answer your questions, but help you with what you trying to do. Email NYU. Geez.

Well, I’m sorry if my question bothered you. I ‘come on here with concerns like this’ for the same reason everyone else does: to see if there is someone out there with a similar situation. People who can connect to your situation give a more realistic edge to your problem and solution than talking to a mostly biased professional who is adhering to the rules of an institution (and I know most of them really are there to help, but they are still biased because it’s their job to think about the rules first, which I fully understand). We can’t expect people who are constantly asked to be considerate and to think about thousands of individual students to connect in-depth with the situation, except for extreme cases (and I don’t consider mine to be one). This is why we seek others who have been in a similar situation because then there’s no need to explain feelings such as why it’s so important and their thought process for the situation might be similar.
I will contact NYU eventually. I just choose to research and make sure I can prepare myself a little bit better by talking to others who have been through something similar first.

I thank you for the concern.

The only way you can be a part of the vocal performance program through Steinhardt is to audition and be accepted. It is a sequential program, so I am not sure if they would audition you or allow you to transfer into the program mid year.

It is very very hard to do VP and fulfill the requirements of an English major in 4 years. As it is, you would probably need to start the sequence of classes for VP as a freshman next year even if they accept you into the program. That sequence needs 4 years to complete, as there are specific classes that need to be taken as a junior or senior. Also there is senior recital (fall of senior year) and senior showcase (spring of senior year.)

The difficulty is not only a matter of the number of classes needed to fulfill both requirements. It is also a matter of fitting required classes into a schedule.

The music program you are in at CAS is non -audition and not performance based. the requirements and demands are entirely different.

You really do need to contact NYU to get real answers. It would be a shame for you to believe this can be easily worked out. Personally I think that even if you are accepted into Vocal Performance, that you would need to take 5 years to get these dual degrees.

BTW D is a senior in VP and will graduate with a 2 minors (one in English.) In order to accomplish that, she has taken 18 to 20 credits most semesters and had AP credits.

PS–who told you that you could not double major if you applied through Steinhardt first? I believe in fact you are allowed to double major–and some students have done VP and journalism (which has fewer requirements). Whether you are allowed is not the question from what I know–the question is going to be is it doable in reality?

Also the biggest question now is will you be accepted into vocal performance which is highly competitive and when.
