I am a comp sci freshman currently with 26 credits already (16 AP and 10 transfer). I want to develop a mathematical mindset to improve my computer science skills. I really want to major in mathematics, but I also don’t want to overwhelm myself because I am running track for Truman. In all honesty, I spend all my time studying anyway. However, I don’t want a lower GPA because of this double major. One of my professors said these two majors overlap a lot, and a lot of students are doing math and computer science double majors at my school too.
is there a question?
It’s a pretty common double major. Idk what exactly you’re asking. I’m a math/CS double major (music minor) and I have yet to get anything less than an A- (I only have two, both not in the majors). Whether they overlap a lot depends on the school. At my school, the only overlap is Intro CS (1 unit), Calc 1 (1 unit), Calc 2 (1 unit), and linear algebra (1 unit). The CS major is an additional 8.5 units of CS and math major has an additional 8 units of math classes. At my university 1 unit = 3.5 credits. So you can see, not much overlap.
Should I double major or not? @menloparkmom
I think that if you are also running track, you should major in the area that interests you most, and minor in the other- IF AND ONLY IF you have time.
adding running to your college schedule is like having another major already…
Choose your primary major, then add electives in the second subject. If you are interested enough in the second subject and can fit a lot of that subject courses as electives, then you can make it a second major.
You do not have to decide immediately, since the typical frosh year courses have considerable overlap, such as the following which can apply to both majors:
Math 198 Calculus 1
Math 263 Calculus 2
Math 264 Calculus 3
CS 180 Foundations of CS
Physics 195 Physics 1
Statistics 290 Statistics
English 190 Writing as Critical Thinking
Liberal Studies (general education) courses
