I'm planning to apply to some colleges and transfer out of my community college by Spring 2015.

I was wondering, is it even possible to do this double major and graduate within, say, 5 years? I'll already have about 3 semesters worth of credits from my CC by the time I transfer, but I figure with a double major I may not finish within 4 years unless I take summer classes and fill up my schedule.

Is this even feasible? Would it make more sense to just choose one as a minor? I originally wanted to major in history, apply to grad school, get a ph.D and strive to be a professor. But now I'm not exactly sure if that's what I want to do. I do know they are both subjects I am passionate and interested in, so I figured the double major would help me.

Is it possible to minor in history and get into grad school for history with just that?

Also, most of my knowledge is just web design and web coding with html, php, and css. I would like to learn other coding languages but I want to improve what I already know.

I guess what I'm trying to say; is this a good idea, or are there better options? Also, does anyone have any college recommendations? Places that have both a strong CS and History education? Preferably places in/around NYC or LA?

Thank you! I apologize if I come across confused; I am actually pretty new to the whole college search since I messed up in high school, but have don very well at community college. I didn't apply to go anywhere else except for community college because I wasn't that sure what I wanted to do up until now.

It is possible to double major in CS and history and complete your degree in four years (two years after transfer), but it can take very careful schedule planning.

It is also more likely to be doable if CS is in an arts and science division, rather than an engineering division, and if your community college has coverage of all of the frosh/soph courses for both majors at your target school(s), so that you will not have to take many or any “catch up” courses after transfer.

Thank you very much for answering! That is a relief to hear.

I suppose my next step would be to research schools with CS in arts and science division/see what divisions the CS is in for some of the schools I already have in mind.

I think I may have to take some “catch up” courses though as I haven’t completed a math course yet, and I am about to be going into my 3rd semester in Fall 2014. I do have some general courses done though. I don’t mind if after transferring I have to stay one extra semester though, but it is relieving to hear that it is possible to finish in a timely manner if I plan my schedule wisely.

If your CC offers courses that match up with the frosh/soph CS courses for the CS major (and same for the history major) at your target school(s), it is best to complete them at lower cost CC before transfer, even if it means staying extra semesters at CC. Your junior/senior schedule will be crowded trying to fit both majors’ junior/senior level courses in, so the fewer “catch up” courses you need, the better. Also, try to cover the general education requirements for your target school(s) as much as possible at CC before transfer.

Doing the double major may still be possible if CS is in the engineering division, but engineering-based CS majors often have additional math and physics requirements, and may have different general education requirements than arts and sciences divisions.

Ohhh I see what you mean now!

I really ideally want to get out of where I am by Spring 2015, but I’ll go look into seeing if I can fit a CS class into my Fall 2014 schedule.

Thank you for all your information!

Sorry for double posting – do you (or anyone) have college recommendations?

I see Berkeley has a BA in CS and also history, but this would most likely be a reach school for a transfer student like me…I’ll keep searching for schools on my own though!
