So i was admitted as an Economics major to UC Berkeley for the Spring of 2015.
I do want to double major, and I see that it is very common to do this in Mathematics and Economics. I will have math 1A+1B, 53, and 54 done before i get to Berkeley. As well as Physics 7A.

however, I was wondering if it is possible to do Economics and Physics as a double major? these are both in the school of letters and sciences, and both have relatively few upper division classes.

When would I declare the second major?
i know we get 5 semesters or 136 units at Berkeley before we get the boot.

what about Mechanical Engineering and Economics? I suppose since these are of different schools, it will be a dual degree.

Any experience on double majoring/dual degrees at Berkeley would be appreciated.

Economics will require 9 courses (8 upper division economics and 1 statistics course), while physics will require 10 courses (2 lower division and 8 upper division physics courses). Since there is no overlap in courses, that means 19 courses – a typical student takes 4 courses per semester, so 16 courses in 4 semesters or 20 courses in 5 semesters.

Adding the mechanical engineering major now may not even be possible.

where are you looking to find this information?
it was very helpful, thank you very much.

so 19 courses in 4 semesters sounds pretty normal. i’ll just need a summer or two. Since i’m a Spring admit, im going to have two Berkeley Summers.

what are the two lower division courses required for physics? Physics B and C?

Hey mikmac,
I just transferred this past spring for Econ.
First semester maybe rough, but your schedule will be one Intermediate Econ, Stats, one elective, and maybe a Decal. Physics would need to be declared at the end of second semester. To do Physics might be quite challenging to finish in four or five semesters along side Econ while still having a good GPA. Might I suggest possibly a minor in Physics?
By the way, is there a reason why you want to double Econ with Physics?
A lot of people I know are considering doubling Econ with majors like Stats, Applied Math, and CS.
As a transfer it is possible, but may be overwhelming.
I don’t think ME will be possible since COE has a different criteria for admission.
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
