Double major: ECE and AME. Is it feasible?

Hello fellow Yellowjackets!

I was wondering if any current students at UR can provide advice on this. Would the double major be possible within four years or would that be too much? I'm trying to use CDCS to plan this out, but I'm not sure if it's as possible as it looks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

To provide more insight, here’s a breakdown of the courses spread throughout the four years: (some courses don’t have the credits number because I can’t find it online)

Would a major in Electrical and Computer Engineering and then a minor in Audio and Music Engineering be better? Or does this distribution look reasonable for a double major?

Thanks!

A major in ECE and minor in AME would be much easier. If you minor, you do not need to do a cluster though you may still need to take an additional class in Humanites/social science. The other thing is the AME courses fill up quickly and are not large to start with so you may not be able to get the ones you want when you want.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll start off with a major in Electrical and Computer Engineering and see where it goes from there. From what I’ve been seeing online though, 15-21 credits is pretty normal for people intending to double major.

Yes but double majoring in Engineering is more work than other majors. You often have both recitations and labs for some of the engineering classes. You will have a better sense after you get there how much over the the 16 credits you can carry comfortably.

Thank you again for your solid advice! I’ve been doing a lot of research throughout the day and have a better sense of this. I’m glad I chose Rochester, because I’m not even completely sure what specific engineering major I’m dead-set on. I’m pretty sure it’ll be ECE, AME, or even Optical Engineering though. I’m just way too excited, haha. Thanks again!

Good luck to you. UR is a great place to be. There are a lot of engineering students or other science students. If you havn’t already, you might want to join the FB 2017 UR forum.
