As I'm sure there are plenty of people on CC that have taken on the challenge of a double-major, I want to ask: just how hard is it?

I say this because my current interests (Writing and Psychology) aren't exactly pulling in bank at the moment. In lieu of this depressing fact, I am contemplating coupling one of them with a more, say, marketable major. However, I'm significantly daunted by the overwhelmingness of it all. Can anyone help me out?

Not overwhelming. Just replaces a lot of your electives with required coursework. But since this required coursework interests you (you’re majoring in it), it’s fine.

It took me a while to decide to double-major, so it added a semester to my college life. That’s the only “drawback.”

Had you not decided to double-major, you’d have been able to–assuming you were on a 4-year program–get your degree “on time?” If so, were you required to take an above average amount of credits per semester?

If I hadn’t gone in knowing I was going to do it and started first semester freshmen year, I wouldn’t be able to graduate on time without taking an above average number of credits for a few semesters.

That’s my school. It really varies.

It just depends, your second major will be mostly upper -div. course work so if there are a lot of upper div. courses for your specific major then the longer/harder it will be where as less required courses or overlapping courses = easier.

If you don’t plan for it, then it will probably postpone graduation. I could’ve graduated in 3 years if I’d chosen 1 major and never changed my mind. I’d also be unhappy with my choice, but that’s not directly relevant to your question.

Hmm. Well, I enjoy writing, which could lead to a number of majors–Journalism, English, or even just Writing, lol–to couple with Psychology. Are there any writing-intensive majors that would “overlap” well with Psychology? I’ve been told countless times how terrible journalism is :(

No, psych and English don’t overlap at most schools. Psych overlaps with biology and somewhat neuroscience if anything…That doesn’t mean that English and Psychology wouldn’t make a fine double major.

Don’t think too much about it. Courses and advisers and catalogs will open you up to all the different choices you have.
