hello my name is Joshua Choe
i am a senior in high school and i have a love for acting
i would like to study acting in college as a minor or a double major with business administration

i have 4 colleges to choose from

penn state
boston university
purdue (gave scholarship)
u of san francisco

which college would you suggest for me to go to? and which college has the stronger department in both acting and business admin?

BU has a BFA program in acting and admission is based upon an audition - over for next Fall. PS has a BA in acting and admission is also based upon audition. You will have to check whether you can audition while a first year student. Not sure about Purdue and SF.

but oppurtunity wise and program wise which would be more beneficial?
and would i be able to take simple courses on acting for a year and audition in my sophmore year?
i would like to learn acting first on a college course basis i might call it a hobby but i would like to take it as a serious activity i like to do

Penn State might be a good option.... they have a good business school, and theatre program. Since you have not yet auditioned for the Theatre BA, you could take acting for non-majors in your first year, and Intro th Theatre... terrific course. You could talk with the BA program coordinator baout aiditioning for the BA once you are there. As far as perfoing goes, students from all majors can audition for most departmental shows, and there are several very active high quality student groups on campus.

I would try to call the theatre department chair at each of the schools you are interested in, and ask what kind of opportunities exist for taking classes and appearing in shows if you and not a major.

I assume when you ask about class size, you are referring to the # of majors, not individual classes. It could matter in terms of how likely you are to be cast in shows.

oh by class size i mean how many ppl are there in the school

my main conflict is choosing between the four schools
so far penn state seems to be like a cheaper choice with better education but the school is so large

i was just wondering if that has any affect on how you learn in any of the courses

Your class sizes in acting at BU and Penn State will be pretty small, if you get into the major classes. Your business school classes will differ based on how large the major is at each school (check the class size information in those departments). Your general education (liberal arts requirements) will probably be pretty large for both of these schools but both have good majors in the areas of your interest.

Ask to talk with Paulo DiFabio at BU in the Theatre program. He can tell you if it's realistic to plan on a double major (I don't think it is but I think you might do a strong theatre minor with an acting focus). Hope this helps.

I went to Penn State for graduate school and am from about 2 hours north of Boston, and have spent a lot of time there. Boston is certainly a much cooler location than State College, PA. No offence to State College, but Boston is a city, and State College is a college town with not a lot going on in it that is not connected to the college. It is also about a 3 - 4 hour drive out of State College to a major city. If you are looking for a more diverse urban enviroment you might prefer BU. However, I think it is difficult for a student not in the BFA program to participate in departmental produtions, but there may be an active non-major group on campus.... anyone from BU out there to say for sure??
