Hi all. I am a transfer student who is attending Binghamton Uni this fall. I will be majoring in Comp Sci at Bing. I was thinking of switching to MIS instead because i enjoyed the business side. I majored in information management at my Community college and enjoyed taking a couple of the business classes. I do not want to be a developer. I am not sure if I should just completely switch majors or do a double major. I am guessing CS and MIS overlap a little. As of now i am at 35% of my degree works for a bachelor in CS. This doesn’t count my last semester at community college!!
Would appreciate any advice! Thanks
If you really like the business side of things and don’t want to be a developer, then MIS would be OK. Just be aware that it doesn’t usually pay as well as CS, unless you happen to get the type of MIS degree that focuses heavily on database programming and administration.
If you major in MIS, you may want to take some of the CS versions of courses in operating systems, networks, security, and databases in order to get a stronger technical background in those subjects than most MIS people have.
Hey guys thanks for the reply. I decided i am gonna stick with CS. I did more research and wouldn’t mind staying with a CS degree. I would be interested in being a database Database Administrator or something with data is interesting to me. Maybe I can minor in business?
That’s overkill to do a double major. Most CS graduates end up getting IT jobs and and never look at a math problem their entire career. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. You could minor in IT if you want to get a nice well-rounded background.
