I am planning on double majoring in college. I want to get into programming after after college. The reason I was thinking about doing a Comp Sci/Comp Eng major was because it would give me an idea of what goes on the hardware side and also the more theoretical and programming side. My second idea was doing a Comp Sci and some sort of a business major because I may want to get into business later into my career.
Which choice would have a greater impact? I feel like I’ll be more marketable because I will have more knowledge with the engineering/comp sci degree. I also think that having a business degree would possibly help me later in my career. What are some ups and downs to both of these? Is it worth it to major in Comp Sci/Eng? Is it worth it to major in Comp Sci/Business?
Hm. What do you see yourself doing in the future more precisely than programming? Do you want to be an entrepreneur, deal more with the business or are you more into computers themself? Maybe you could read the curricula of the programs, take a look at books or lectures in those subjects, and then decide?
@RebeccaJay I haven’t decided yet since the field is so broad. But I do want to get management positions later in my career. I want to start off as a software programmer. Maybe I can get into programming apps or something.
I’m not sure what CompEng actually is, but hardware oriented courses involve more electronics, physics, and telecommunications. Software oriented will usually involve more mathematics, programming languages, algorithms.
You can see what the course you want to go to recommends. Books, I mean. I’ve heard that MIT has good lectures recorded on EdX. I haven’t seen them myself, though. You can search on youtube for other videos as well…
You mean mobile apps? I don’t know much about it, unfortunately.
To me it seems like you are more into management than hardware, from what you just wrote, at least.
